Bob Costas Thinks I Blog From My Mother’s Basement

Here is the little man’s comment regarding bloggers.

“It’s one thing if somebody just sets up a blog from their mother’s basement in Albuquerque and they are who they are, and they’re a pathetic get-a-life loser, but now that pathetic get-a-life loser can piggyback onto someone who actually has some level of professional accountability and they can be comment No. 17 on Dan Le Batard’s column or Bernie Miklasz’ column in St. Louis. That, in most cases, grants a forum to somebody who has no particular insight or responsibility. Most of it is a combination of ignorance or invective.”

“It’s just a high-tech place for idiots to do what they used to do on bar stools or in school yards, if they were school yard bullies, or on men’s room walls in gas stations. That doesn’t mean that anyone with half a brain should respect it.”

If you’re unfamiliar with Mr. Costas, his resume includes hosting a combination of MLB, NFL, NHL, and NBA regular season games, postseason games, and all-star games.  He has also done six olympic games, a Breeder’s Cup, and hosts Inside the NFL (now defunct) and his own show, CostasNow.

I’m not totally sure of the context of Costas’ comments but there is enough there where you don’t have to know what question was asked to get the gist.  I can understand where little Bob is coming from.  He is someone who is well respected for not only his broadcasting abilities but knowledge of the vast sporting arena.  He feels as if he has worked hard to get where he is and the bloggers, in general, and sports-bloggers to be exact, devalue his and the sports writing profession.  I tend to agree to an extent.

The point he is missing is the fact that like most things only the best and brightest survive.  Sure, there are millions of bloggers, just as there are millions of sportswriters and millions of sports broadcasters but only the best make it to a point of having a devoted audience.  He is right, it is one thing to set up a blog from my mother’s basement and put my opinion on the web but it is a totally different thing to set up a blog from my mother’s basement and put my opinion on the web and have a readership.

Well, for your information Mr. Costas, I don’t blog from my mom’s basement; I blog from my condominium, which I own (or rent from someone but that besides the point).  As far as having insight and responsibility…I’m working on that. Food for thought…udothedishes.
