A Note On Cinco De Mayo
Just as with St. Patrick’s Day and Valentine’s Day, Americans lust for any excuse to guzzle beers like Soulja Boy’s 2008 Cadillac Escalade guzzles gas (that was a lame metaphor, I know). Now, Cinco De Mayo comes along and gives us Americans another reason to indulge. Here is how I feel about St. Patty’s Day.
From Wikipedia:
“The holiday commemorates an initial victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza SeguÃn over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. A common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day; Mexico’s Independence Day is actually September 16 dieciséis de septiembre in Spanish), which is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.” – Hopefully this is true.
Yes, just in case you were stupid enough not to know why you were wearing that ridiculous sombrero to the bar tonight, Cinco De Mayo is a Mexican holiday. I’m not going to lecture you all on the hypocrisy of our feelings towards those of Mexican heritage in this country because I think your smart enough to put two and two, together. But don’t you think it’s convenient to openly and verbally despise Mexican-Americans for supposedly “taking away our jobs,” loitering in front of our 7-11′s, allegedly boasting the crime rate, or simply for no reason at all while still celebrating their holiday of heritage and pride?
I WAS going to add Cinco De Mayo to the list of useless holidays, but after rethinking its initial bid I think I like Cinco De Mayo if only for the fact that it highlights our affinity for picking apart things to keep the parts that we like and to disregard the parts we don’t like (it’s the American way).
So, kiss me I’m Mexican.
Oh and if you couldn’t put two and two together or if you’re just not from Virginia; Manassas has a high Mexican population. You can catch many non-Hispanic or Latino residents of Manassas stating their disdain for those persons from south of the border. So, it’s ironic in this case that the person exclaiming they wanted a corona for Cinco De Mayo is the same person who also wishes all Mexican Americans would leave America.
Spread the word and Udothedishes then repeat…
