Tha Carter III: You Can Hate All You Want, But You’ll Buy It Anyway

“Swallow my words / taste my thought / and if it’s too nasty / spit it back at me”

I’ve taken an entire week to listen to the latest installment from the self-titled “Greatest Rapper Alive” and I have to admit that I like the album even more each time I listen to it.  Of course, Lil Wayne keeps the clever quips and crazy metaphors coming throughout the duration of the disc, but the CD does not end up sounding uber-contrived or like a beefed up mix-tape.

A range of different beat types comes from a motley crew of producers.   Kanye West produced three songs in the final line up and you can definitely tell it’s a Kanye beat when it fades in.  Lil Wayne also is never shy about letting everyone know he respects “The Louie Vuitton Don” by mentioning him early and often including a respectful shout out in “Dr. Carter,” in which Kanye and others are given love:

“But I say it’s enlightening
Besides Dr. Kanye West is one of the brightest.
And Dr. Swizz can stitch your track up the tightest.
And Dr. Jeezy can fix your back up the nicest.”

Other producers include ex-Ruff Ryder Swizz Beatz, The Alchemist, David Banner, Cool & Dre and Maestro.  The mash-up of different producers creates a variance between songs but the album still manages to flow quite nicely.  There are also an array of guest appearances including Robin Thicke, Juelz Santana, Fabolous, Jay Z, Babyface, T Pain and Busta Rhymes.  Each featured artist definitely brought their “A” game as they tried not to get killed lyrically by Lil Wayne.  Juelz made the best effort in You Ain’t Got Nothin with lines like “Obey me like peasants / or get opened up like presents.”

I can go on and on about the CD but I know most of you will shut your brains off when you see a post longer than a few paragraphs.  So here’s the bottom line, I give Tha Carter III 4.5 Out of 5 stars.

My favorite songs include:

Dr. Carter
Phone Home
Mrs. Officer
You Ain’t Got Nothin
DontGetIt

My favorite line is as follows:

“Always use the Latex, cuz you don’t want that late text, that I think I’m late text”

Don’t forget to listen to Lil Wayne’s ramble in “DontGetIt,” even though he’s smoking a fatty, he makes some good points.  Go ahead and hate on this review and then…..

The Junkies were clubbin Lil Wayne today on their show. They took one example from Wayne’s library, Lolipop, and made blanket generalizations on his ability. That’s how I know their old and out of touch because they said he couldn’t hold a candle to Jay-z lyrically. Wow – Disaster.

I think lil wayne is on the same tier as Jay-z, and lyrically he can def. throw some fire but I do not think for a min. however that he adds up to what Jay has become. And the only reason he never will is because Jay had the Luxury of coming first. A precedent always becomes the benchmark no matter how relevant the current matter. Jay-Z is a beast, but no matter how big he ever gets, he’ll never been seen as better than Biggie or Pac. Nor should he be, they came first. Just like law. You always go back to the foundation in order to classify the new. Even when the old is overturned or defeated, the old is still remembered for the history.

Not who I am, just how I’m feeling at the time.
