The iPhone and Blackberry Battle for your Hearts and Minds
I have to commence by saying that I own a Blackberry Curve so, I’m going to be completely and utterly impartial. Seriously though this isn’t a review of either the iPhone or Blackberry, I’ll leave that to the professionals; rather it’s a commentary on the two devices. Even if I wanted to I couldn’t properly assess in totality the technical ups and downs of the iPhone because I only know what I’ve read and what I’ve seen from a few interactions with it. In actuality, I’ve owned the BB for 7 months and probably couldn’t give it the due diligence necessary to write-up review.
With that said, whether it’s the iPhone, iPhone 3G, Blackberry, Blackberry Curve, or Blackberry Bold (all mind you, serviced by AT&T — seems like there would be a conflict of interest there somewhere) they all cater to an explicit audience.
- Apple’s mobile is for the consumer. The trendy, jet-setter who wants to not only impress but have something on her hip that’s pragmatic. (Nothing says JACKASS quite like a beltclip with a phone in it)
- RIM’s cell is championed by the “suit”. Obviously, consumers can be suits and suits can be consumers but RIM’s “crackberry” has the corporate market in a proverbial stranglehold.

From what I can see both the latest generations of these phones have made attempts to
transition closer to the aspects of the other which are most popular. Blackberry is transitioning to more add-ons. Customizable exterior and more consumer friendly applications for the BB while the iPhone transitions to a better e-mail interface.
I’d liken the maturation of the iPhone to none other than Puff Daddy, aka P. Diddy, aka Diddy, and finally now known as Sean Jean. The iPhone in a little more than a year went from singing hooks in the background to B.I.G. or Mase or Shyne or Loon tracks to cleaning up and heading multiple million-dollar companies. It’s a stretch I know but I’m trying here.
The Blackberry on the other hand is more like the artist formally known as Britney Spears. The Blackberry began as cordial and consumer-friendly but is slowly transforming into a less reserved, less business-casual diva. Let’s hope it doesn’t spin off the face of the earth as Ms. Spears did.
