I’ll Tell You Why America Is So Great

When I was in high school and a bit too green to actually think about it, I bought in to the fact that America was the best, most dominant and powerful country in the world.  Being on a liberal college campus for four years afforded me the opportunity to take a step back and realize that our two-party system of government is problematic, our race relations are triflin, and the gap on the social ladder between rich and poor or even middle-class and poor is eye-opening.

Regardless of our ills as a country, we’re the last great empire and no other country really wants to F with us.

An example of the pride and patriotism we here Americans exude can be seen with Chris Kaman’s story.  The American professional basketball player applied and received German citizenship to play on Germany’s national team.  He had never been to Germany, didn’t speak a lick of German, and never even got a chance to meet his great grandparents whom three generations ago migrated to America, mind you.

The story here isn’t that this marginal NBA hoopster with no chance of ever playing for our redeem team went over to play for Deutschland.  No, it’s the fact that his father is sitting at home in in Michigan watching the Olympics, routing for team USA and against his son and the German team.

Leroy Kaman told Chris before the games, ‘You’re not German, you’re an American citizen’”  and I’m a hundred percent with him.  I know America is a melting pot and essentially a collection of all the other nations but when you were born here and have no strong link to the country your ancestors came from then I have a problem with you.

I don’t have a problem with paying homage to the grandparents but when your father isn’t even behind the decision, it holds a lot less esteem with me.  No matter, as we speak the Americans are racking the heads of the Germans in round ball by 20 at halftime. So, war Leroy Kamans, his pride and grasp on reality is why America Is So Great.

Now a video that describes the US’s dominance.

I don’t disagree with Kaman’s choice to play for Germany in the olympics. This is not a rare occurence and the athlete is simply seeking to compete at the highest level. If I had a chance to play on the world’s biggest stage I’d probably take it also.
