Shwayze: Shwayze

As I’ve stated before, I enjoy music but would not consider myself qualified to write a technical review of any artist’s musicianship. So simply put, this isn’t a music review, it’s a music review according to me and how I think music should be reviewed, less critically. The artist is Shwayze and no it’s not a group as one would glean from watching their “reality” tele show on (where else?) MTV (actually it might be a group but who really cares). Shwayze is the black dude and the white guy is his producer Cisco Adler. Bam, review complete.

You need to know from the beginning that this Shwayze is the west coast’s version of Pharrell Williams but with a little more (or less depending on how you look at it) substance. But don’t go to Best Buy looking for Shwayze’s new album expecting conscious hiphop because he’s no Common.

His genre would be placed in the stoner, pop, rap category if there is such a thing; a quaint mix between Maroon 5 or Jimmy Buffet sounding beats courtesy of Cisco Adler with a Tech N9ne, abc-123 style of rhyme.

Though the lyrics aren’t cerebral, when they’re combined over Cisco Adler’s beats the finished product becomes viral. That is if you give the CD a
second listen. Initially, after my first listen I just wasted my $9.99 back but the bazillion marijuana references coupled with overt misogynistic tone and melodic soul began to grow on me. My final thoughts were this is perfect music for the beach and I think that’s the point.

I can’t deny the fact that I’m a sucker for a black man representing himself as something other than a gangsta and the racial harmony exhibited by the vanilla/chocolate mix of Adler and Shwayze is an encouraging commentary of our forward thinking society. Out of 12 songs from the album I chose this one because I think it best depicts the tone of the album. In summation, Shwayze is all-right by me.
