The Red Light District: San Francisco
Imagine walking home from an uneventful night at the pub and you stumble upon a "cat house." Could it be true, prostitution, legalized in San Francisco? The night rebirthed…
Well not quite yet but it will be if one "Proposition K" is passed by the citizens of the County and City of San Francisco on November 4th. It may seem radical, I know, but it may just work.
Prostitution is legal in several counties in the states of Rhode Island and Nevada. (More info here ) Supporters of San Francisco’s "Proposition K" say it will cut down on rapes and STD’s among prostitutes, making it safer for all parties involved. Also, the city would no longer need to waste time, effort and money trying to prosecute offenders. I wont even get started on the positive economic effects because I don’t want to bore you but think of all the money that the state sponsored lottery brings in, double it and you have prostitution’s potential. Prop K is backed by the San Francisco Democratic Party and several
candidates for the SF board of supervisors. Ironically, it is opposed
by democratic mayor Gavin Newsom.

What could threaten Prop K however, are some flaws in the fine print. The lift on the ban may be too wide open in that prostitutes would be allowed to walk the streets hence the moniker "Streetwalker," creating a huge image problem for the city. Sure, pimps could come into the equation somewhere creating another set of problems, but that is fixable. I say let the "Pros" walk the streets in designated districts. If you want sex or are curious as to the goings on, then check it out; if not stay away. A Red Light District could only add to what is one of the most distinctive cities in the U.S.
If Prop. K passes then San Francisco will be the first major metropolitan area to decriminalize prostitution. Could DC be next?
