A Turban Doesn’t Equal Terror
November 23, 2008- In my never ceasing effort to become more tolerant, educated, and to direct my disdain in the right direction when it comes to cultural/racial issues, I discovered what many of you already know. . . The absolute certainty that a Turban and a beard do not equal to a Muslim extremist.
The majority of the people in America you see wearing a Turban are not Muslims, Arabs, or even Hindus; they’re Sikhs and they have absolutely nothing to do with the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, or UBL. If you comprehend that one statement, then I’ve done what I set out to do with this post. If you don’t understand or you’re the intolerant, non-believer, malcontent type, then I’ll go on…
Sikhism doesn’t come from Pakistan or Afghanistan; it derives from India. It’s the 5th largest religion in the world, and there are approximately 500,000 Sikh men and women in the U.S. today. If my memory serves me correct, and it always does, Sikhism is the only religion that requires its followers to wear a Turban. Not to say they are the only people you see wearing a head dress because they aren’t, but the rounded Turban you saw depicted above is a staple of their faith. Not to be crass, but this means you can now disassociate your cab driver or 7-11 attendee with terror. Just as you and I are functioning, positive members of American society, so are Sikhs. In fact, they are probably more positive than you.
This is just the periphery of the issue. I didn’t even begin to get into the meat and potatoes of Sikhism (to do that click here) because you all, like me, have short attention spans. Just know a turban doesn’t equal to terror or terrorists. Enjoy your Sunday.
