After scanning through the news, I came across this breaking news story. Giants starting WR Plaxico Burress allegedly shot himself in the leg last night while out at a Manhattan nightclub. His loaded gun went off accidentally, thereby solidifying his title as a NY  idiot. This is bad news for the G-Men, but good news for the rest of the NFC East.

The report is unclear, and fails to give any details about how it happened, but this story just compounds a terrible trend among star athletes. Whether it’s Matt Jones of the Jaguars getting caught cutting up cocaine in his car at 4AM, or Adam Jones involving himself in a strip club altercation, the stupid choices these millionaires make are annoying as hell.

Just because you take someone and give them the “finer” things in life does not mean that they will make the most of it, I know that. The thing that bothers me is that guys like this get not only a second, but a third, fourth and fifth chance. This sends all the wrong messages to young people that look up to sports mega-stars. If you’re talented, then the rules don’t apply to you. You can act like an idiot and never have to face the consequences of your actions. There is no way to stop these stupid choices without enacting mandatory curfews or strict rules, which would be laughable too considering they’re grown men, but I just wish these guys would realize, (1) how lucky they are to be gifted athletes, and (2) how many young people look to them as role models. I bet Joe Montana and Jerry Rice never did stupid shit like this. The worst part still is that this news will be all over ESPN. This terrible incident will be yet another blemish on a league that has a lot of very stand-up players that make good choices in life. And stories like this will overshadow anything positive that the respectable players do.

I wish Burress well and hope he’s not seriously hurt, but maybe next time when he’s on a division leading football team, he’ll think twice before he goes out clubbing till 3AM with a gun he probably has no license or expertise to carry. Getting rid of him was the best thing the Steelers ever did, though he played a major part in the Giants Super Bowl run.  He is a talent, but as the Steelers have proven, talented receivers aren’t difficult to find if you have a savvy front office

Hey Plax, save the clubbin for the off-season and leave the loaded gun at home. If you’re scared for your safety, try hiring a bodyguard who actually knows how to use a gun.

Food for Thought…

I suggest mandatory gun qualification for athletes. If they’re going to carry ‘em we can’t have them shooting themselves in the foot. Hail to the Redskins.

I think Siragusa put it best: If you’re going somewhere that you think you may need a gun, just stay at home.

So apparently, Steve Smith was robbed a week prior to this incident by the driver of his Limo. So, athletes do need guns?
