Desperate Times Call For Desperate Measures

As if you haven’t heard, the D.C. council approved the measure to allow any food establishment to stay open around the clock and any establishment with a liquor license to sell alcohol until 5am during the dates of Obama’s inauguration (Jan 17-21). To be clear, this is only in the District of Columbia and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty has yet to sign the legislation (He’s stated that he will), but according to everything I’ve read, it’s unprecedented.  Millions of people traveling from all corners of the U.S., homogenizing into one organism with libations, is a catalyst for the most worthiest of causes.  Sounds like a perfect ending to a movie.  Doubt it will be so ideal, though.

I’m totally in favor of extending the drinking/eating hours, but this isn’t a perfect world.  Out-of-towners mixed with townies throughout the streets of a small city reminds me of the time in 2002 after a Virginia Tech football game in Blacksburg.  What happened? Well, the usual:  burning couches, altercations, and DUI arrests.

Anything in the name of capitalism and commerce, I guess. Cheers!

It’s not totally unprecedented. They did it in Minnesota for the Republican National Convention earlier this year. I know if I start drinking at normal time i’ll be sleep before the place closes.
