Review: Kings of Leon

Today, I walked with a little bit more pep through the office of Food for Thought LLC HQ.  It might have been the laying to rest of a relationship doomed to fail from the beginning, but more than likely it was the music…

Anytime I’m put on to good music, I feel, well, good.  We all get stuck in our own sphere of musical influences and sometimes the thousands of songs in our Ipods aren’t enough to quell are musical appetite.  So when someone introduces me to a new sound whether rap, hiphop, r&b, rock or what have you and I actually like it, then it’s a GOOD DAY in my world and my Ipod’s.

What is good music?  Everyone has their own opinions and their own likes/dislikes but if you approach the question with an open-mind I do believe that the sound of good music trancends across racial, socio-economic, and cultural lines.  Enter Kings of Leon.I will say it’s a good week for GOOD MUSIC in my world because on tomorrow night I will be in the district at the Rock & Roll hotel to see O.A.R. with one of the most important people in my life.  Can’t beat that.

I digress.

So, Kings of Leon.  In “Manhattan,”  their lead singer shrieks,

“We’re going to feel the fire; we’re goin to stoke it up. We’re going to sip this wine, and pass the cup. On these avenues, on these reservoirs, we’re going to show this town how to kiss these stars.”

The Kings, as I call them, don’t have the most thoughtful of lyrics but their rhymes aren’t so simplistic to be without meaning and feeling.  As I often say, with the right voice and the right music accompanying that voice, it often doesn’t matter what the singer is talking about, and this is a perfect example.   Think Coldplay but less scientific and Maroon 5 with more testosterone.   Open your mind and see if you dig it.

Just the song with a Tennessee, hippie picture montage: “Use Somebody”.

I was skeptical at first, then they started to grow on me, but now i’m skeptical again…haven’t made up my mind just yet, but new music should be a regular on here..do work..

  2. Blake Johnson says:

    From the RollingStizzone:

“…bland and overly ponderous. But when the Kings find a gussied-up groove with teeth €” like the effects-laden Zeppelin stomp of “Crawl” or the pulsating, New Wave “Sex on Fire” €” they sound like rock heroes experiencing the joy of well-manicured sound.”

Other than that sentence not a overly-positive review.

Whether they are good or not, I’ve heard about them on TV, Radio, and plenty of websites. So they are doing something right.

They are better than a lot of crap I’ve heard before.
