Why I’m not Going

2 Big O's

How can I argue with this?

“I’m not big on crowds. I’m a contrarian. When everyone zigs I can’t help but zag, but this party I absolutely could not miss. I had friends who were scared off by the dire predictions of far too many folks and far too few port-a-potties but, damn, knowing what we know now, would anybody not go to Woodstock because of the lack of latrines?”

Really I can’t.

I, too, consider myself a contrarian.  I’m usually late to recognize a good thing, especially if it popularizes quickly because I shun things most like (American Idol, Ipods, the like); it’s just my nature.  Don’t get it mixed up, I’m not shunning Barack Obama but I just won’t be on the mall to hear him speak.  It’s not even a crowd thing; I do hate crowds but I did move into the city so I can’t hate them that much.  It’s not the weather either because truth be told I like cold weather.  I’m one of the few people I know who prefer 10 degree temps to 75 degree temps.

So what is it then?

I’m not going to the inauguration because I’m lazy (1) and because I distract easily (2).  Please don’t confuse the word lazy for apathy.  I voted (as if that really means I’m not apathetic) but I figure if I’m in the comfort of my own home I can focus on what he’s saying instead of the crying infant next to me.

I don’t mean to trivialize this momentous event but it’s like going to FedEx to watch the Redskins play versus watching it at home in high definition. Going to the game is cool.  Tailgating and sitting 400 rows up is nice, but do you really get a firm grasp on the intricacies of the actual game?  Just like with the Redskins, I’m going to watch Barack Obama from the comfort of my house with my 52′ Sony HD but that’s just me; I do believe YOU should go.  As Trey stated in his piece Why I’m Going, “…knowing what we know now, would anybody not go to Woodstock because of the lack of latrines?”

I hear you on that bro, why risk the hassle when you can just watch it on your own television. Its a great opportunity for everyone to attend but I’d rather see it with my own eyes in my own space without having a bunch of loud emotional people in my ear all day. I see where you coming from because I don’t like being clustered around a lot of people either.
