[Update] Contemplating Suicide Because of DCRTV…
Update from DCRTV:
6/11 – As rumors swirl that guy talker WJFK will soon flip to sports talk, the DC City Paper takes a listen to Luke Thomas, who hosts a Saturday MMA (mixed martial arts) show on the CBS station. “We thought we’d experiment with some different kinds of shows last year, and of all of them, MMA Nation is the only one that lasted,” WJFK Program Director Chris Kinard tells CP. “I wasn’t aware of anybody else doing (an MMA show). And (in April) he outperformed our normal weekend ratings by more than double. We started out thinking this has the potential to be a nationally syndicated show, and that’s still our plan. You see MMA all over the place on TV, so why not on the radio?” Adds CP’s Dave McKenna: “If WJFK follows through on its long-rumored switch from general guy talk to sports talk, Thomas is in a good spot to profit from the format change”…..
I’m sick of the homogenization of terrestrial radio that we have been seeing over the past few years and it just seems to be getting worse.
and this
Sportsy JFK To “Blow Up” Junks? – 6/10 – A local radio guru tells DCRTV: “It is likely that if WJFK does go all-sports they will follow the CBS format of teaming people together… A seasoned broadcaster with a local sports personality or writer. The ‘big fish’ remains Tony Kornheiser, who would like to do an 8 AM-to-10 AM or 9 AM-to-11 AM post. Nothing near noon because of his ‘PTI’ duties.” Another source tells us that CBS is “seriously thinking” about “blowing up” the Junkies (right), essentially pairing the four guys differently on different shows on the potential new sports talker, rather than having all four together in mornings. A top CBS DCer denies talk about the Junks’ split-up…..
I am a huge hip-hop fan, yet I can’t listen to WPGC or WKYS because it is the same “top 10″ garbage songs again and again; payola in radio is out-of-control. Anyway…
I have found WJFK (106.7 FM) to be the one salvation from this mess (without subscribing to the satellite monopoly) and now DCRTV is reporting (from, as they put it, a reliable DCRTV source in the local ad community) that “sales management has informed them of possible format changes for WJFK,” in addition DCRTV suggests that, “both JFK and TGB, the Globe, haven’t performed well in the new PPM radio ratings.” To make it even worse, the switch may be to sports talk?! Seriously? Are there not enough crappy sports talk radio shows out there as it is?
WJFK is a one-of-a-kind lineup with 3 strong, original, talk-oriented shows that all perfectly compliment one another. All the shows have the most active listeners that I’ve ever seen, which is evidenced by their turnouts at live events (aka an advertiser’s wet dream). Why would CBS even consider messing with this formula?
If you are a supporter of this station, now is the time to start listening more, telling friends and letting CBS know how you feel. Even if you aren’t a fan of the station, just for the sake of keeping something original on the air, please spread the word…
and after you spread the word, make sure that
udothedishes…

I second that emotion. Everytime I get sick and tired of hearing “Live Your Life” (which is every five minutes) I flip to WJFK and get refreshed. Junks in the mornings…Big O and Dukes at lunch.
How can you not like hearing T-Pain’s whining ass voice on every fucking station you flip to? But seriously, I only listen to 95.5 when Tigger’s on. Everything else is 106.7!
gotta agree man especially Big O and Dukes…106.7 keeps me sane as i spend about 20 hrs a week driving…..
It’s final. The shows are being canceled, at least Big O and Dukes, which I’m listening to now. I can’t believe WJFK’s killing a great selection.
