D.C. Restaurant Week-in-Review

A post by "Blake the Megalomaniac" To see more posts click here

Monday: Founding Farmers

Wednesday: BLT

Saturday: Kaz Sushi Bistro

Sunday: the Palm

So, I was tempted to put this review together in a video montage but after the “Day in the Life” segment we just recorded today about…well… me, and the Oscars, by which those with more skill and talent got together to give one another a pat on the back, I thought better of it.  I’m no actor; I’m barely a writer for that matter, but I do like to eat out and with that said comes a brief review of each of the four eateries I visited.

Founding Farmers [1924 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington DC 20006]: …I wasn’t impressed. Fundamentally, FF is something we can all get behind, especially in this economy.  It touts itself as a D.C.’s greenest restaurant which is noteworthy but the food leaves a lot to be desired.  It’s supposed to be from “the farm to your plate,” and at some points of the meal it did seem as if I was on the scene of Little House on the Prairie feasting on unseasoned but fresh fare.  The tomato soup app. was the highlight of my meal.  They also feature a creatively designed cocktail menu which I do enjoy.

I’m not counting FF out..  Its mission statement is so major league that I must give it another chance before I add it to my Mcdonalds all-star’s list.

Douchbaggery of Clientele: Low

Atmosphere: 5/10 Service: 7/10 Food: 6/10

BLT [1625 Eye Street NW Washington, DC 20006]: Not on the restaurant week list, BLT was a late addition to my lineup because it came highly recommended.  Initially, I was taken aback by the complimentary appetizer; I believe it was a sort of chicken liver spread which if you ask anyone who knows me, would usually force me to vomit but it was delicious.  The main entree of American style Kobe beef (if there is such a thing) was cooked to perfection but not as delectable as my date’s fillet.  The Parmesan Gnocchi was something I’d return to have again.

The story here wasn’t the food but the atmosphere.  BLT is an upscale steakhouse without all of the upscale pretentions.  The energy and tempo is unlike that of the normal, mundane chop houses (i.e. Ruth’s Chris or Capitol Grille).

Douchbaggery of Clientelle: Average

Tomorrow, I’ll detail my visits to one of D.C’s most touted sushi bistros and a chain steakhouse that rarely dissappoints.
