March Madness is King of Commercials
On Sunday evening, there was still only one King worth watching, and it came on right before “The Donald.” Yes, this was the second week for the new NBC show Kings and I’m still fully vested.
I’ll admit that the show is a little slow to develop, but I’m writing that off to the fact that it’s a new story line and has to set the ground work. What keeps me interested is the great camera work filled with imagery and a unique film style. I also really like watching Ian McShane. He’s creepy, but I love it. I’m giving the show one more week to knock my socks off, or else I’ll be forced to revert back to bitching about how there’s nothing good on T.V.
Well, at the very least I can still watch the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournament. Let me take that back, I can try to watch the games, in between the million and a half commercial breaks. This is getting a little ridiculous if you ask me. You can’t even watch the teams go up and down the court three times before there is another T.V. timeout. And to make matters worse, the 4 commercials you have to sit through are the exact same on every break. If it’s not a new car ad or how Bud Light has “Drinkability”, then it’s some other worthless product that I care nothing about. If anything, the fact that these companies are cutting in to my viewing time is making me less likely to buy any of the crap they sell.
I think all sports sponsors need to address this issue much the same way that soccer does. It’s one of the only reasons I enjoy watching Soccer on TV. The sponsor doesn’t interrupt my viewing with a break every three minutes. Instead, they have a header tag along the top of the screen. I giggle with joy when I see it, “Presented Commercial Free by HOME DEPOT”. I actually do appreciate this move by Home Depot and to show it, I will use their services, because not only do they have a great store, they care about my viewing pleasure. Unlike Lowes who feels the need to interrupt in order to lambaste me with Gene Hackman’s voice, like he is an all-wise hardware shopper.

I think AIG should work this into their new strategy to win back support of the American people. They should use our taxpayer money to present the NCAA Final Four commercial free. That way, at least we will know our tax dollars are going to good use.
