National Sportsmanship Day
Tim Kurkjian opened up with a quip about baseball sportsmanship. He pleaded to professional pitchers to stop throwing at batter’s heads to back them off the plate. He gave a great analogy about pitchers proving there mettle by giving someone a little high heat. It compared the brush-back to Michael Jordan dunking on someone. When Jordan tries to dunk on someone the worst that can happen is the person is posterized and eternally embarrassed. However, when Randy Johnson throws at someones head, the worst that can happen is the person gets killed. Pretty point-blank. I concur with this one.

Mark Schlereth went to his cup of tea, the NFL. His big sportsmanship plug was asking defensive players to stop pointing and nodding their head after they make a tackle. His point was that O-linemen don’t point every time they successfully make a block.
I’m a bit biased on this one. As a former defensive player I gotta say that Schlereth is being a bit of a sissy. The head nodding isn’t about being a poor sport. It’s about being a showman to the crowd and giving your team some energy. Buuutttt….sometimes dummies go overboard and act like they nailed someone when in actuality they barely made a shoestring tackle.

Finally, Jalen Rose decided to dole out some NBA expertise. His plug, “respect the game.”
…crickets
He had all day and that was the best he could do. Respect the game?
Moving on; What does everyone out there in udothedishes land think about NSD? My suggestion for better sportsmanship: stop letting douchebags play sports. No douchebags leads to less douchebag antics on the field, court, ice, pitch or whatever they’re playing on. ESPN got the worst sportsmanship plays correct, watch.

How bout that back kick to the catcher before the Baseball dude rushed the mound? Man that was pretty well timed.
And in my view sportsmanship is a lot like humility. Very few people have it, and those who do go unnoticed because it’s way more interesting to focus on the people who screw things up and cause problems.
How bout a TOP 10 Sportsmanship plays instead of poor sportsmanship plays?
Here you go guys. Gotta read this one.
