The WBC, Hoagies, and The Office
I’m going to begin with the World Baseball Classic. All of the sports fans who frequent Food for thought know that no one important cares about the WBC as far as America is concerned. Yes, there were all-stars and MVP’s but if you watched then you could tell easily that some countries simply cared more. True, the competition had a high caliber of player but as of 10:44pm eastern standard time, it’s safe to say we learned, a lot of players who matter, care more about spring training and the MLB season than bringing home a WBC title for their “country.” That might change with Japan and Korea squaring off in the championship for the 2nd straight year.
{Update: Japan Wins its 2nd title in 10 innings}
I don’t know much about history but I do know that baseball is America’s past time. However, on the outside looking in, one would ascertain that it’s Japan or Korea’s. Just as it took the Europeans embarrassing us in Olympic and international basketball for Team USA to get right…an Asian champion in the WBC for the second straight WBC might make American players and coaches along with Hispanic players and coaches take notice and shape-up (or are they just better than us?).
Another thing about the WBC: ESPN flipped over to a shot of Korean fans filling out a full stadium in Seoul, South Korea and I thought to myself don’t these people have anything better to do, it’s like 12:00pm there? It just goes to show how much more seriously these countries take the WBC, does it not?
If you read through that but only b/c you knew something more interesting was coming, then think again b/c only the equivalent to verbal diarrhea is in your future.
So, I was at place called Bourbon (2321 18th St NW Washington, DC 20009 - (202) 332-0800) tonight for dinner and the waitress recommended I try the bourbon tenderloin sandwich or something similarly named. After taking a couple bites I realized that it was a strong sandwich: tenderloin, onions, tomatoes, thick bread, and avocado smothered in BBQ. After completing half of the meal I realized the key to a good sandwich and I’m about to drop that knowledge on you post haste. Quoting my inner monologue,
“The key to a good sandwich is the need, check that, urge to eat the sandwich even though the meat is gone. (I’m so profound) That is to say, although the best part of the sandwich is completed, you still want to finish it b/c it’s that good.”
Lastly, because I need to go to bed, I will leave you with this… last post’s topic of contention was centered around 40-year-old Virgin starring Steve Carell: true. I have nothing against Mr. Carell but his brand of comedy, whatever that is, doesn’t entertain me. No, I’m not entertained. I just don’t think he’s very funny. I do, however, believe his show, The Office, is strong in spite of him. So, if I like The Office with Steve Carell what will I think about The Office without him?

Well, frankly, I thought it was more honest, more real, and a lot more comical. See for yourself. The original Office…Office (UK).

udothedishes…
the original version of the office was great. if you go back and watch the first 2 seasons from the american version, they even used the exact same plots from the british version though they did attempt to ‘americanize’ some of the themes and terms to suit the audience. i watch the american version, but the british version was better, plus the ‘Pam’ character also had a role in the hilarious “Shawn of the Dead”
The biggest problem with the WBC is the fact that it deals with the lamest sport in the world. I’m sorry to all baseball fans but the best thing about baseball is going to the stadium and getting hammered, eating hot-dogs and talking about real sports. We have evolved as people and baseball has been left behind. Baseball is not a team sport and that is evident when players are moved 100 times during a season that plays 340 fucking games. Everyone in baseball uses steroids and the concept is whack. I would rather watch Tiger drop birdies from 150 feet out than Manny Rameriez and his dreadlocked ass run around a diamond and split sunflower seeds everywhere.
P.S.- You talk about amazing sandwiches, everyone needs to go to Willard’s BBQ in Chantilly, right by the Hooters. They don’t have a bad item on the menu!!
I would rather watch grass grown than watch a baseball game.
But I was also raised playing Lacrosse, and it’s no secret that we were taught to laugh at baseball.
Someone once tried to tell me that the hardest thing to do in sports is pull in a one hopper at short stop. Tell that the Clinton Portis as he tries to outrun Ray Lewis.
I enjoy America’s version of The Office but only because of Rainn Wilson. He is what makes that show in my opinion. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t even bother watching it. However, I refused to watch for the longest time because I was a fan of the UKs version way before.
Also…. hate hate hate the sappy love story between Pam and Jim which seems to just becoming more and more of the show. That and they are leaving the office more often… booo
