Local Ish: 4/10-4/14
Here’s your local look at things going on around the area this weekend. I have expanded this week’s edition to also include a show going on next Tuesday night that should be tight, and I didn’t want to leave it out just because it doesn’t fall on a weekend.
As always (and I can’t stress this enough), while I try to include things that are outside of my general interests (an attempt to appeared cultured?), I know that there are plenty of things that I miss…so I strongly encourage anyone reading this to submit upcoming events (if you know about them early enough) or post them in the comments.
Now that I have quite possibly broken the world record for longest run-on sentence, I bring you your Local Ish:
Friday – 4/10
- Since this is a DC-based blog, I would be remiss if I didn’t at least mention the Cherry Blossom Festival going on. I’m sure we’ve all been to see the trees plenty of times, but in case you have guests visiting, this weekend is considered the last of the “peak blooming period”.
- The previously featured Tom Bouch will be at Backyard Grill in Chantilly, starting at 10:00pm. As with every show of his that I’ve been to, expect a crowd so get there early.
- I’m a huge fan of FREE BEER…and from 5:00-7:00, you can get some at Lilit Cafe’ in Bethesda.
- Aisha Tyler (Comedy Central, Talk Soup, Friends, Nip/Tuck, The Boondocks) is going to be at the DC Improv both nights this weekend. While her latest Comedy Central special wasn’t what I would consider her best, this is a genuinely funny chick with a ton of talent and I’m sure her live show will be a lot of fun.
- Gary Gulman (from Last Comic Standing) is going to be at Arlington Cinema ‘n’ Drafthouse and if you listen to Big O and Dukes, then like me, you know that the Drafthouse is the epitome of a good time both Friday and Saturday night. Tickets are $22.
Saturday – 4/11
- The National Gallery of Art is having a photography exhibit from 3 of the legends of photography entitled ‘Oceans, Rivers and Skies: Ansel Adams, Robert Adams, and Alfred Stieglitz’.
- WJFK is hosting the UWC Cage Girl Search Finals at the Hooter’s in Manassas. I don’t really have much else to say about this to convince you that it could be a good time. If you can’t get that from the words “Cage Girl” and “Hooter’s”, than this may not be the event for you.
- In addition to FREE BEER, I am also a huge fan of the ALL YOU CAN DRINK-style event. Starting at 8:00, Kelly’s Irish Times (you gotta love the Irish), is having a 3-hr drinkathon for a mere $15. (On an unrelated note, the phone number for a Sober Ride Taxi is 800-200-8294 and Kelly’s is not far from the Union Station metro stop)
- Corona’s Hottest Bartender Party is from 9:00-12:00 at The Park at Fourteenth. Complimentary Corona & Appetizers from 9:00-10:00. RSVP is required (RSVPOntap@park14.com).
Sunday – 4/12
- In honor of the above-mentioned Cherry Blossom Festival (yay trees!), Mie N Yu, which was one of the main “places to be” during the inauguration is having “cherry blossom-inspired” food and drink specials. Um…i guess that if you live in DC and have nothing better to do on a Sunday, this may be worth checking out (?).
Tuesday – 4/14
- Self-described as “garage rock + electronica + irony”, I first heard of ‘the potentials‘ a couple of months ago from a friend and after giving them a few listens, I have to say that I am impressed. I am also anxious to see how they perform live…which they will be doing at Jammin’ Java in Vienna. The show is all ages, doors open at 7:00, and the first (of 4) bands is scheduled to start around 9:00. Expect standing room only and a $10 cover.
I would like this column to become a resource for everyone reading who may be looking for something different to do, but there’s no way that I can make it as comprehensive as I would like without your help. I already mentioned that I would love suggestions, but I would also like to hear your reviews if you do attend any of these events (whether you think I’m right on in my assessment or have missed the mark completely).
Also, while you are putting together your suggetions/reviews, make sure that
udothedishes…

I went to the D.C. Bunny Hop Bar Hop last weekend. It was a blast. Good suggestion. Beer was cheap, and the crowd was full of life. The only downside was everyone went home by like 1130 due to starting to drink at around 5pm.
awesome man, thanks for the feedback and glad you had a good time
