Local Ish: 4/2 thru 4/5
As anyone who regularly reads this column (are you out there?) knows, this feature is an attempt to help you shake up your normal weekend routine with some local events you may otherwise have not thought or heard of. Yeah, your local watering hole is close and comfortable, but even a homebody like myself has to switch it up a little bit.
Thurs – 4/2
- Battle of the Cover Bands…I think you can pretty much figure out what this is. Road Soda, Dr. Fu, and Misspent Youth will battle to see who gets crowned the 2009 Miller Lite House Band for the pre-game shows at Nationals Park. This is taking place at the Continental Modern Pool Lounge starting at 9:00pm.
Friday – 4/3
- Local favorite (and all around nice guy), Tom Bouch will be performing at Brion’s Grille in Fairfax (across the street from GMU). In the last month Tom has launched his website and gotten engaged to his longtime girlfriend Tara! So come out Friday night to congratulate Tom and come see him play. I’m a hip-hop head, so you know if I like his music that it is definitely gonna be good.
- Starting Friday, and performing all weekend, Christian Finnegan (from Chappelle’s Show’s ‘Mad Real World’ sketch among other things) will be at the DC Improv and as far as I know, there are still tickets available.
- FREE BEER tasting, 4-8pm, Westover Market (5863 North Washington Blvd, Arlington)…and that’s about all you should need to know about that one.
- Every Friday night, DC Parrnada hosts what they bill as ‘DC’s Oldest and Biggest Latin Party” at Sesto Senso. While I’m the last one you’ll see on the dance floor, this is something I would definitely check out at least once to see what kind of ‘ambiance’ the place has.
Saturday – 4/4
- The 18th Annual, Cap-City Bunny Hop from 3-11pm. Registration is at Mackey’s Pub (or you can buy tickets here) and is only $10 and allows you to ‘Hop’ between 8 different bars that are all offering food and drink specials.
- DC United vs Houston Dynamo / (UPDATE – POSTPONED?), while they started off 0-2, since then they have followed up with 1 win and 2 ties in a young 2009 MLS season. This is also the first game this season where they are offering special, reduced pricing so now is as good a time as any to go check out a game. (NOT SURE IF THIS GAME IS ON OR NOT)
- A lot of DC (to me) is monuments and museums and I’m sure that most of us have experienced the unique pleasure of visiting the National Museum of American (or was it Natural?) History for the 7th time with relatives or friends visiting the area for the first time…so, normally I wouldn’t suggest you spend your time at another museum, but this involves ninjas so that changes the rules of that game. Here’s the only catch, its for kids (no parents allowed). So, if you have kids (age 10-14) and want to drop them entertain them (with something other than the TV) for a couple of hours, head over to the International Spy Museum @ 800 F Street NW at 10:30am for ‘Ninja: Discover the Art of Ninjitsu‘. Here the kiddies can learn secrets of ninjitsu from Viran Ranasinghe and his troop of martial artists from ninja star target practice to the always fun ‘listening drills’. On the site it doesn’t clearly say whether or not you can leave the kids there, but at the very least you can see the museum at your speed. –UPDATE–SOLD OUT–
Sunday – 4/5
- The Editor-In-Chief of the NAACP’s Crisis magazine, Jabari Asim, will be at Politics & Prose Bookstore discussing and signing his new book, What Obama Means: For Our Culture, Our Politics, Our Future.
- On Sunday nights at Teasim, the evening starts off (at 7pm) with open mic slam poetry and then ends with the professionals taking the stage. Cost is only $5.
As a final note, I know that everyone involved in this site genuinely likes to hear your feedback and thoughts, so if you do go to any of these events, please let us know how it was. Also, if you know of upcoming events that you think readers may be interested in, please contact us and let us know and it may be included in future columns.
