Local Ish: 4/23-4/26

A post by "Stacks " To see more posts click here

Some people have asked me recently what the hell ‘Local Ish’ means.  ‘Ish’ is the sound that is made during a (usually hip-hop) video when they are trying to edit out the word ’shit’… and since the title ‘Local Shit’ probably won’t draw a whole bunch of readers, this is my way of letting you know of the local events going on.

Now that you know the deep, dark secret of the origin of the title, here’s some Ish for you (animals) to feast on:

  • Tonight – The semi-finals of the Last Band Standing competition is tonight, 8:00 at Jammin’ Java in Vienna, VA.  There are 4 bands performing (FUTURE & 3 other groups) and the order is determined immediately before the show…so,  make sure to get there early to cheer them on and see some great live music.lbs

Friday (4/24)

  • Filmfest DC continues through (and ends) this weekend.  There are multiple screenings each day so I encourage you to check out the website to see which ones would be of most interest to you.  This is a chance to see some quality films and support some filmmakers and writers with original ideas.  If you are tired of seeing the same remakes and recycled ideas continue to float through Hollywood, your support can actually make a difference here.  With these smaller films, each dollar they recoup from their production costs is that much more important in determining their success/failure.  And of course, once the studios see that we don’t need to be spoon-fed the same drivel and that a movie can be both profitable AND imaginative, more and more will continue to get made.
  • “Family Ties” Marc “Skippy” Price is at the All Stars Comedy Club in Arlington.  A couple of points:  1) the show that he was on gets higher billing than himself – 2) he was a bit character in a show that ended 20 years ago and yet, his character’s name must still be included so that anyone even has any idea who he is.  Combine this with the website, and something about this combo just screams “trainwreck” to me.  If someone is willing to sacrifice their night to go to this show and report back on it, I would genuinely be interested in finding out how it went.  Is Nick going to be next?

Saturday (4/25

  • If you’re having a hankering for a nice, cool Natty Lite (wtf?), look no further than Asylum to help you quench that thirst.  From 5-6 they’re $0.50 and the price goes up by $0.50 every hour until 11.
  • UWC Capital Punishment is going to be at the GMU Patriot Center.  Doors 6:00/Start 7:00.  There should be a lot of good fights here, the headliner being Mike Easton defending his Bantamweight Title against Josh Ferguson.
  • And while I know it may seem strange to go from cheap beer, blood & testosterone to folk music, I have said before that I want to try to be diverse in the offerings I post here so…3-Time Grammy Award-winning folk singer Tom Chapin will be at Wolf Trap starting at 7:30.  Tickets available here.

Sunday (4/26)

  • Another band that has been mentioned in this spot before is the potentials who will be performing with Prisms at Galaxy Hut in Arlington.  The show is at 9:00 and the spot is conveniently located right by the Clarendon Metro stop for those that don’t want to be driving.

If anyone attends any of the events here, or has suggestions for the upcoming weekend, I always encourage you to share them.

[ENDNOTE:  I don't want to use this space to shamelessly plug other stories on this site, but these Firefighters and every other single one out there definitely deserve recognition for their heroism.  And not just for the events of that particular night, but for what they do each and every day.]

Doesn’t everyone who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s know what ish means? Oh yeah, I forgot after 1995 they didn’t play music on MTV

The website for the Italian Restaurant that doubles as comedy club was not professional grade.

  3. That site was low budget as hell
