Nationals Prez Sports Equivalent to Uncle Tom

A post by "Blake the Megalomaniac" To see more posts click here

I’d rather not use insensitive terms like Uncle Tom to describe anyone because I’ve been called my share of demeaning names, but Stan Kasten leaves me little choice.  The Washington Nationals President essentially admitted that the product he’s helped put on the field is so inferior that no one in his city wants to watch it.  By getting on another city’s(Philadelphia) terrestrial radio and imploring visiting fans to come out in full force to your (our) stadium is embarrassing.  The Nationals are doomed until people who understand how to run a winning franchise get in there; of course if the Nationals begin to win, then I take it all back.  The Nationals, and to a lesser extent the Redskins, suffer from inferior ownership but at least the Redskins seem to stay afloat in spite of their executives.  The Capitals and to a lesser extent the Wizards seem to have a savvy business model and a personnel framework that if it’s not totally successful right now, has shown to work in the past.  Here is Kasten’s quote from the his Philadelphia radio interview via DC Pro Sports Report.com:

“It will be fun, and I think Philly’s our best, closest National League rival. We always have great games with them here, because there’s so many Philly kids in college here. So we always have great, enthusiastic crowds, and we hope you all come back again. We have an opening day here Monday, we’d love for all our Philly fans to come down, because I know it’s gonna be so hard to get tickets in Philadelphia this year. It’ll bemuch easier if you drive down the road and come see us in Washington.”

At least we still have Chick or do we?

does anyone even like baseball anymore?

I’d like to see lacrosse become bigger than it is now, and baseball take a hike.

The baseball bashing on this site is ridiculous. Do you all not understand the history that is associated with baseball? Babe Ruth led the country after World War 1 and through the Great Depression. Jackie Robinson was a crucial part to the success of the racial integration in this country. Baseball has always been at the pulse of what is going on in America. Look at the game now with all of the players from Latin American countries. There’s a reason why 20,000 fans on avg go out and watch a baseball during a economic downturn. If you to a game at Wrigley or Fenway or even one of the newer ballparks. There is soo much history there it should give you chills if you know what your doing.

For some people sure there might not be as much action or violence as other sports. But that just makes you guys checker’s players while baseball is a game of chess. There is more thinking/gameplanning that’s goes into every pitch, the placement of every defender and even every swing of the bat than any other sport. And yes the hardest thing to do in sports is not running through a hole with 250 lb freaks trying to tackle you. Its hitting a 85-90 curveball that starts at your head and breaks over the strike zone.

Anyway, its hard to build a winner when the team you inherited has been rebuilding for 6 years, traded away all its superstars for a bag of beans, and has a depleted minor league system. They are on the right track though. They have a re-loaded the minor league system and have a lot of young talent in the majors. They need some of their youngsters to develop. Drafting Steven Strasburg in June will go along way and they will probably take a bat with their second pick in the top 10.

I don’t give a shit about all that – I was simply saying that inviting visiting vans to your park isn’t prudent nor does it cultivate fan loyalty.

Who cares where the fans come from? If you go to any stadium there is fans from other cities. We Sat behind a buncha tools from Philly when we saw the CAPS play and their going to the playoffs. Thats a smart businessman. Since Angelos has a monopoly on all communication in this area why wouldnt he reach out to other markets.

I also disagree about the Wizards having a good framework nor good decisionmakers. You even said they were horrible in the Sunday edition. Getting to the playoffs in the east isnt worth anything. And they couldnt even get out of the first round. They are an average franchise at best. It took injuries to two players this year to start the rebuilding process that should have started 5 years ago. At least now they will have a chance to improve themselves rather than drafting marginal player after marginal player that the coaching staff cant seem to develop.
