Redskins Cease Defying Conventional Wisdom

A post by "Blake the Megalomaniac" To see more posts click here

So far 11 USC players have been drafted as I write this in round six of the NFL draft.  Although the Redskins did not draft Rey Maualuga, I’m ecstatic that they weren’t able to move up to acquire USC’s Mark Sanchez.  Whether or not the reports that they wanted Sanchez were smoke screens or not, it’s apparent that WE (the Redskins) WERE NOT GOING TO GET BETTER BY DRAFTING SANCHEZ.

Taking a quick look at the draft I think on paper the Browns and Bengals took significant steps in the right direction.  They addressed their needs while more or less drafting the best players available, which if you read our football guru BEZ’s column, is the key to draft — drafting the best players available.  The Redskins also took heed of conventional wisdom by addressing needs and drafting the best players available.

Brian Orakpo from Texas, is a physical specimen.  It’s assumed he will be able to translate his pass rushing prowess in college to a pass rushing propensity in the NFL but as others have said, he will need to toughen up on his run defense to become a complete player.  Nevertheless, he should be a Redskins’ starter this season and for years to come; now Andre Carter is no longer the most menacing looking player on the team.  Check Orakpo’s video.

The next pick for the Skins was a local guy, Kevin Barnes.  Barnes grew up in Glenn Burnie, MD and played at UMD.  He’s 6′1, 190 pounds, and is now our tallest cornerback.  From his combine video it looks as if he’s stiff in the hips and judging off the ball he double caught in that video he might have problems with his hands too.  Be that as it may, he’s a physical corner and corners who are physical are usually accountable and dependable.  I’d be happy if he unseeded Rogers, our number two corner, because he’d compliment Deangelo Hall nicely.  Hall being our pure cover corner while Barnes, who admittedly likes to hit and says that he, “will compete with anybody,” is our physical corner.  I obviously have a grudge against Carlos and am hoping he loses his job — ain’t nothing wrong with a little competition. He’d be an awesome nickel corner.  Did I say Barnes likes to hit? Peep the vid of Barnes making a CAL WR toss up his cookies…

Cody Glen (Nebraska) was taken with our third pick and he adds depth to our linebacking core.  He’s a converted runningback which means he has athletic ability.  Him along with our next to last pick, linbacker Robert Henson (Twitter) out of TCU and our two other defensive picks should ensure that our 4th ranked defense doesn’t take any steps backwards and that we don’t fade in the fourth quarter as we’ve been prone to do.

I guess we’re looking for the Skins to look to offense with their compensatory pick.  On the radio on Friday, head coach Jim Zorn said he was going to draft a quarterback regardless so, QB or RB I’d assume.

  1. Good luck going up against all the oxen the NFC East has for OT’s.

Good off-season for us..Owner and GM are both retarded tho..JC will be OK as long as he has a line, our WR’s will be better and CP will be CP for the next two years or so..Orakpo is a gem – we got a potential great one here (I’m glad he fell down to our laps)..Let’s get it Skin’s…Pokes
