Preview: Public Enemies & Funny People
Wolverine was a flop. Star Trek made an impression. Terminator, however, was pimp slapped at the box office by Ben Stiller’s Night at the Museum and now what do we have left to look forward to this summer? . . . G.I. Joe? I won’t hold my breath; a Wayans brother hasn’t been in a successful movie since I’m gonna get you Sucka.
All is not lost (I don’t think) especially when Michael Mann and Judd Apatow are involved. Mann is usually associated with quality flicks and although Apatow may be wearing thin on movie goers, film executives still maintain their infatuation because he maximizes the bang for their buck. Mostly low budgets and admirable gross incomes. Jewish dudes have the film industry on lockdown.
Anywayz, Mann’s newest offering is a depression based, crime drama based on a true story. With names like Depp, Bale, Channing Tatum (had to use his full name; he’s not quite at super stardom yet), Crudup, and Dorf, it seems like something you’d be interested in.
Now Funny People feels like a documentary slash comedic drama and it’s about time Apatow came at us from a different angle. It bodes well that Judd is credited as director, writer, and producer; last time he did that he brought us Knocked up and 40-Year-Old-Virgin. I’ll look past the fact that Adam Sandler, who hasn’t made a watchable film in awhile, is in it because we still have everyone’s favorite smoker, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, RZA, and our boy, Aziz Ansari.
