Mos Def: The Ecstatic
A few weeks ago I got Mos Def’s new album, The Ecstatic, and I highly recommend it for anyone who still remembers what good ol’ hip-hop used to sound like. In typical fashion, Mos Def a.k.a Pretty Boy Flaco Bey, provides a versatile range of styles that include both hard-thumping hits (seeĀ Supermagic and Pretty Danger), soulful drum patterns (seeĀ Quiet Dog Bite Hard), and laid-back jazzy melodies (see No Hay Nada Mas). For all the technical junkies, rest assured; each song is very well written and the wordplay flows extremely well between bars. But of course this should come as no surprise, Mos is undoubtedly one of the few true Hip-Hop craftsmen still in the game. It’s almost a shame that this album will never get to radio, but considering the airwaves have become a broadcasting medium almost exclusively reserved for garbage, it might just do the album justice to keep it off the airwaves.
