Review: The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
I’m going to be completely honest to every reader out there on this one; I had no intention of seeing this movie at all. I certainly had no intention of seeing it during its opening weekend. However, I had a few moments available Sunday evening so I made a quick jaunt to Potomac Yards with my chica. After picking up some popcorn and a cherry coke…I was quite surprised.
Okay, all of you out there have to be saying “how the hell can you be surprised by Denzel and Mr. Grease Lightning?” For some reason, the trailers and commercials just didn’t really get my attention. I suppose it got swallowed by all the block buster action flicks coming out this summer. Sadly, it even lost to The Hangover and Up in its opening weekend. That being said, I implore everyone out there in reader land to take some time go see this movie. It was amazing.

This movie was everything the NBA championship series was not. Washington and Travolta took up the roles of Kobe and Lebron while bringing the arena fans to their feet. The movie has action, it has a wonderful plot, but the movie was made by these two decorated actors simply talking to each other. I haven’t been so entertained by simple (non comical) dialogue in all my 25 years. This movie was built on acting and acting alone. It’s a breath of fresh air not be looking for the next “CG” scene.
You guys can Google to your hearts content to find the plot synopsis and cast. Everyone played their roles exceptionally well. The storyline wasn’t groundbreaking but it sure did leave room for the stars to perform. Cinematography wise, the angles hyped the drama but there wasn’t much license that needed to be taken with this one. My only complaint is one scene where the camera twirls around James Gandolfini for about thirty seconds. I thought I was going to puke.
Right now this movie is the front runner of the summer line up. A glorious 4 squirts from KG the Juiceman based mostly on two Oscar caliber performances from Denzel Washington and John Travolta.

I have every intention on seeing this. The original is an awesome movie too. But it begs this question:
Is Denzel the new Walter Matthau? Are he and Don Cheadle (Jack Lemmon) going to remake the Odd Couple? Now THAT would be awesome too…the possiblilties for negative stereotype humor of every stripe are assailing me from all sides as I write this…must..be..strong..must not..give..i
I hada similar experience with “Man on Fire,” another excellent Denzel Washington sleeper.
