2009 DC Hip-Hop Theater Festival
Today (7/6/2009) marks the beginning of the 9th Annual DC Hip-Hop Theater Festival. The Hip-Hop Theater Festival (HHTF) began in the summer of 2000 in New York and became the first organized event to include the music, dance, history, stories, and people of hip-hop all at one venue. HHTF was named the 2009 Organization of the Year for their leadership in the field of hip-hop nonprofits at last weekend’s Words, Beats, and Life event and received the award alongside legendary hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa (of the Universal Zulu Nation).
In 9 short years, this event has grown exponentially from 2 events, to 30 full-length productions in cities throughout the country from DC to Chicago to San Francisco. Brought to you by the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, all of this year’s events will be FREE, so make sure to make your reservations early.
Here are some clips from the New York festival:

Sounds good,, but what’s the rationale for supporting this touring event with local DC funds?
Washington D.C. has never been a model of fiscal prudence. The rationale, I imagine, when the discussion of how to allocate their tourism and events budget went something like this – “f*ck it, why not?”
while i’m not 100% positive on this, i do not believe that they fund any of the other legs of the tour, just DC. on an unrelated note; i just learned that lupe fiasco will be performing opening night
