harry-potter-and-the-half-blood-prince2Lets start out with a number: 159.7.  Now, lets add one symbol and one word to said number: $159.7 million.  That’s how much money Mr. Potter brought in during it’s first five days in the box office.  The till is the highest amount brought in by any of the franchise’s films.  I presume the next logical question is: Did it deserve the hype?

Well, mostly “yes”.  A little “no”. The movie is very entertaining.  The teenage awkwardness of all the characters gets ramped up twenty notches in this one.  It comes packed with kisses, annoying girlfriends, and hormonal jealousy.  But when it came down to the moment of truth, the action packed climax, I feel that it kind of flopped.

There is a HUGE event in this movie that just wasn’t properly delivered.  I’m trying not to spoil it but I presume there’s no way around it.  Click the back button on your browser immediately if you don’t want the spoiler….

Okay I warned you.  Dumbledore got killed at the end of the flick. Big deal right?  Well, according to the movie, not so much.  There was so much opportunity to really make a heartbreaking emotional scene for this but it just didn’t happen.  Instead, it felt more like the director, producer, and actors were merely setting up the next and final movie.  I haven’t even read a single book but I know that Dumbledore getting 86′d was a big deal.  However, it got presented with less power than when Cedric bit the dust in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Anyway, if you haven’t seen the Half-Blood prince yet, I do still recommend it.  Besides from the aforementioned bumbled scene, it was a good movie much like its predecessors.  I know this isn’t technically a review but I’ll go ahead and squirt on this one like usual.  3 Squirts out of 5.

First, I’ll say I have not read a single book. Second, I’ll say I’ve only watched maybe 2.5 of the movies. The one’s before this didn’t completely irritate me. I didn’t even really like them, but they were at least visually stunning and somewhat entertaining. I also get a kick that every single famous british actor are in these movies. However, I really disliked this one.

I think I’m the only girl out of all my girl friends (and some guy friends) who are in love with Harry Potter and Twilight so it was inevitable that I was dragged to the midnight showing… which to my surprise (really, I should’ve known better) was filled with hormonal 15 year old girls who find everything these characters do hilarious and perfect.

All the girls squealed when they were being “cute” and they all laughed when things weren’t funny and they overlaughed when things could’ve been funny. I went in with low expectations… and still walked out unsatisfied. But maybe it was just the crowd I was surrounded by. Maybe I’ll give it another shot. I won’t even speak of the noises created when the New Moon trailer popped up. I slumped down in my chair with my hand over my mouth for the remainder of the show.
