Meze: Fully-Vested
Meze located at 2437 18th Street NW Washington D.C. 20009 has been my place of worship the last two Sundays. As I haven’t found a real place to “have church” in D.C. (nor have I actively sought one out), the past two days of rest I’ve found myself indulging on their outdoor patio soaking up the sun and enjoying the thoughtful menu items.
MEZE describes itself as:
“All around the Eastern Mediterranean, €œmeze€ (pronounced €œMEH-zay€) are small dishes designed to complement a beverage, tease the tastebuds, and encourage diners to linger around the table for good companionship & conversation.”
So I’m thinking Meze is the Turkish version of Tapas (and I don’t really care for Tapas) but b/c I have yet to try Meze’s dinner offerings I wouldn’t know. I can speak on the brunch though, which isn’t so much Tapas style. I can also speak on the outdoor seating on a sunny day with either a mojito (I’m a fiend mojitos, what movie is that from?) or a orange juice and champagne mixture whose title has seemed to slip my mind.
Truth be told, I’m not an outdoorsmen. I have bad sinus problems and all sorts of undiagnosed allergies that inhibit my enjoyment of the outdoors. I also
hate bugs and we all know that bugs are outside. But I set these personal shortcomings aside when it comes to eating outside. Meze’s outdoor area is intimate and it should be. Space is limited on 18th street and restaurant owners should feel fortunate to have any space there, in my opinion anyway.
Sitting outside and eating makes me feel like that’s how whomever put us here wanted us to eat. Before all the air is rendered unbreathable and the ozone layer vanishes you better take advantage. Especially when you can sit so close to another table that you can’t help but be made privy to the ins-and-outs of those people’s lives.
The brunch is simple. Different types of omeletes, a few versions of the egg benedict, fresh fruit dishes, and waffles or french toast and all the choices are affordable. Not affordable like the price is low and so is the food quality and service but affordable like for 30 pesos you and a date can eat something that’s made fresh and plated well and drink a nice Sunday morning libation all with friendly and attentive service.
All right! I’m tired.
Atmosphere: 9/10, Food: 8/10, Service: 9/10, Price: very affordable, DB Threat Level: Yellow (elevated)
food for thought, udothedishes . . .
db threat level…this is such an overlooked, yet crucial factor in determining how a dining experience will be. thanks for continuing to include it b/c that’s one of the first things i look at
for anybody that’s new to the site: DB = douche bag
Mimosa…
