The LaVar Arrington Show with Chad Dukes

A post by "Blake the Megalomaniac" To see more posts click here

PH2005071201641I tried to perfectly sync the time for which I turned off my car and the time for which I could make it up to my apt. with a commercial break from The LaVar Arrington Show so I wouldn’t miss the openness, the ventilation, the insider information sharing, and the strong opinions.  I was unsuccessful but still once I made it in the first thing I did before I took my customary bathroom break or even turned on the air conditioning in my blistering hot studio was to navigate over to WJFK.com and stream.

You know how old people say ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same,’ well that old adage has never been more true with WJFK.  I can only go by the 30 minutes or so I listened to the Sports Junkies, the hour I listened to the Mike Wise show, and the 2 hours (it’s 4:15pm as I write this) I’ve listened to the LaVar Arrington (and Chad Dukes) show but it seems so far so good; two new shows and the same quality radio.

As far as I’m concerned, all the speculation on how LaVar and Chad would meld together or if they could, has been answered in my mind.  Who’s going to be the talent, would Chad take a back seat, would he even have to?  Well it’s LaVar’s show but Chad is still Chad.  That’s the beauty behind the plan, I suppose, when you pair a true Washington Redskin, and true professional with a true on-air personality, and true professional.

I know you remember this . . .

So far so good.  The two strong, sometime brash personalities, seem to be playing nice so far and actually seem as if they’ve formulated a bond.  Whether that bond is friendship or it’s the bond formed between a real Redskins’ fan and a real Redskin, matters not, the show is going well so far and I’m excited to listen to it.  I’ll go as far to say that I’ve already began to plan my day around their 2pm – 6pm time slot.

It’s interesting to note that before I knew what I was doing with this whole blog thing, I fashioned this blog after the now defunct Big O and Dukes Show.  If you look back on many of the topics I wrote about you’ll find that the timing of the posts matched up perfectly with show day featuring the same topic (if that makes sense).  Looks as if I’m back to my old tricks because I think it’s interesting that one topic the new guys broached earlier today was Jason Campbell, quarterback for NOVA’s team.

Dukes seemed to think that the QB for Washington Redskins was more recognizable than any other athlete in the D.C. area.  This was something I’d heard from him in the past and did not agree with and it seemed that LaVar shared my stance saying that right now as I write this and as they do their show at 4:25, that this is Alexander Ovechkin’s town. It’s still a Washington Redskins town (until the Steelers come to in again anyway) don’t get me wrong but it’s Ovechkin’s world and you’re just living in it.

LaVar made a great counterpoint when Dukes stated something like the  average black guy in our area didn”t know who Ovechkin was.  LaVar said something like black or white, if you’re a D.C. fan then you like a winner and the Washington Capitals are the only winner we have in town.  Couple that with the fact the Ovechkin is the best player in hockey and has two MVP awards makes this Ovechkin’s town until further notice.  Make no bones about it, just because Ovechkin is white doesn’t mean he looks like some geek off the street.  This is the “Russian machine that never breaks.” A 6′2, 220 pounder walking around with missing front teeth.  You’re telling me a D.C. fan wouldn’t recognize him or at least recognize that this has never been Jason Campbell’s town.

Mr. Campbell has a lot to prove on the field.  He going to need help to get it done though and honestly I think he can.  If he’s putting in the time like I know he is and racks up a couple of playoff wins then he can easily overtake Ovechkin as D.C.’s favorite son even sans an outgoing personality like other famous Washington athletes like Clinton Portis, Chris Cooley, and A.O. don.

Bottom line, I’m going to miss Drab’s random on-mic laugh in the background, Oscar’s stories about his high society living and his foreignness and the intimacy of the former midday show but this is what we have now and I’m giving it a chance.  The guys did a sound job with the Jason Campbell interview. Jason is always soft spoken but whether you love him or hate you have to respect what he’s been through this off season and how he’s handling it; like any man who considers himself of the highest character would.

Now I’m ready for football season.  Just waiting for training camp, Madden ‘10, the preseason, and finally opening day at New York. Oh, and if Daniel Snyder tried to buy WJFK then we should start a coup d etat against him.  Who’s with me?

Still a little bitter about Big O and Dukes, but from the little bit I heard from Lavar and Chad today the show sounded pretty good. As with all sports talk though, sometimes I wonder if they’ll have enough to talk about on a daily basis. It’s hard to listen to all of the speculation about this season when it’s the same things being said every day, on every medium, and we’re still a month and a half away from some real, meaningful football. I guess we’ll see.

I’m still not sold on Lavar. I heard the segment on Campbell and I think that coupled with the two or three appearances he did to promote the show is evidence that Lavar still has a lot of bitterness towards the skins. I think that is a recipe for disaster for the show once football season rolls around. This is still the Redskins town and Lavar is self-admitted Steeler fan. Ask B Mitch how criticizing the Redskins and Joe Gibbs affects your broadcasting career in this area. I do like that Dukes is in a new time slot because now I can I can actually listen to all the commentary you all rave about.

I’d say Gilbert is the most recognizable athlete in DC even with his two and a half year hiatus. Next is probably cooley. Then comes Ove. Hockey is still 2nd tier and probably always will be…

chad, what a little girl, just run away i am not listening anymore to your insipid (look it up) show and you a little sniveling girly man, too afraid to step up….no grand for the ratings…and you cut off face book, you need all the friends you can get, 167???? pitiful

I gotta respectfully disagree. The new show is just not all that good. Lavar has a better voice and demeanor for radio than I expected. He seems to be trying hard and trying move beyond just being another bombasitc ex-jock. But there chemistry and flow stinks so far. Lavar does not have much of an authoritative voice on anything but the Redskins, and that alone is going to carry the show. Chad Dukes just sounds bored with the whole thing. They both seem to be trying hard to make it work, but I don’t see this show being much more that Redskins 24/7. That sells Chad’s skills way short. My guess is CBS will fire Chad the moment they think Lavar can handle it on his own. Its all really too bad, WJFK had something special with BO&D and TMOS, now its just another cookie cutter sports in a largely disinterested, 1 sport town.

Chad Dukes is God? You people are retarded. The dude hasn’t been in radio all that long. He has no proven track record. Frankly my faith in Washington talk radio, sports especially is going straight down the tubes. You see veterans with respectability getting their TV shows and radio shows cancelled and idiots like this moron getting a shot in prime time. Gimme a break! I hope Snyder buys JFK and cans the whole lot! Serves CBS right for screwing with the format in the first place.

  7. stacks says:

i agree that the ‘chad dukes is god’ statement is way overboard but at the same time there’s no reason to resort to name calling….jackass ;)

i think that chad dukes is very talented and funny but i’ve tried listening to the show and he just sounds stifled. if one of the callers to BO&D had said some of the stuff that comes out of LaVar’s mouth they would’ve been ripped a new one but now he can’t be doing that to the guy who’s name is on the show.

i think the station flip was a terrible idea. that station was one-of-a-kind and i listened to at least 10 hours a day. sports radio is like political and religious radio in that everyone has an opinion, no one considers anyone else’s opinion, and most of the so-called ‘experts’ are wrong more than they are right.

    such a shame…

I have been a long time listener of 106.7. I was very sad to see the old lineup go away, but with change – comes fear. Knowing this, I kept the preset and have listened to your show since its inception. Need to be honest here – your show sucks. The butchery of the english language from Lavar and the sophomoric rants of Chad Dukes will ultimately decide their future. Ex-Jock and fat boy Dukes,,, best of luck!

  9. Blake the Megalomaniac says:

I recant everything good I said about the new show. Granted my review was only after one week of listening so I give myself a reprieve but the Arrington show sucks. Chad Dukes is still good but he’s not in his element on the show thus he’s horrible on there too. It’s all Redskins bashing all the time.

Jules, you write as if you’re speaking directly to Lavar or Chad. Rest assured they’re not reading this but I read it and I appreciate your comment. Come again soon.

This is one of the worst radion shows I’ve ever had the misfortune of hearing. Chad Dukes is…well Chad Dukes. He’s pretty funny, is charismatic in a juvenile way and keeps your attention. unfortunately Lavar sucks the energy out of the show. He constantly struggles to string together a coherent sentence or thought. it’s just painful. All the stuttering and stammering…it’s just dreadful…it almost forces you to change the station. For so many years I’ve been able to count on 106.7 for my morning commute, but it seems those days are over. Oh well…at least they left the Junkies on in the am.

  11. Alex Bungres says:

This is nothing personal against Lavar, but he has no business having his own radio show. He’s a lousy public speaker. Many people are lousy public speakers and that’s ok but they also don’t have a radio show. I totally agree with Sho220 that Lavar “constantly struggels to string together a coherent sentence or though”, and the tone of his voice is not very radio-friendly. I was trying to listen today to Lavar’s reply to Clinton Porter’s comments about Lavar, but it was probably the most painful half hour of radio to try and sit through. Lavar was rambling mostly incoherently about the same thing over and over again without getting to the point at all. I can only imagine what his producer and Chad Duke must be thinking while this segment was going on. It was a disaster.
