UFC 100: Uneducated Picks (Mir v. Lesnar)

A post by "BEZ " To see more posts click here

BEZ and I are avid proponents of MMA and UFC and today, July 11th, the UFC will broadcast UFC: 100, which is a huge milestone in their 16-year tenure as one of the top promotions in mixed martial arts.  Before the biggest pay-per-view event in MMA history, we’re going to give you our uneducated opinions on the bouts on the main card. First, we brushed over the Jon Fitch v. Paulo Thiago fight then we made an attempt at analyzing the Hendo v. Bisping tussle and after that we got into the meat and potatoes: GSP v Thiago Alves. Now it’s time for our thoughts on the big boys and possibly the best fight on the card.  Here we go.

BrockLesnar

vs.

frank-mir

Blake the Mega’s take:

Before Brock Lesnar’s arrival via the NFL by way of the WWE, Frank Mir sat a top the mountaintop of arrogance.  If you watched him as the coach of the UFC’s the Ultimate Fighter you got a pretty nice glimpse as to his likeable but cocky personality.  Mir’s trials and tribulations are well-documented and so is his skill.

If you don’t know Brock Lesnar by now and you fancy yourself a fan of MMA then you may never know and as I’m on my way to cookout then UFC party, I don’t have time introduce you two.  The bottom line is he is a stud which is how Frank Mir describes himself but ultimately pails in comparison.  Possibly the most athletic fighter in the UFC, if Frank gets into a strength contest or thinks he can use the standup he showcased versus Nogueira then he is mistaken.

Still, although my head is saying Lesnar my heart is saying Mir.  I cannot go against the UFC vet and one-time heavyweight champion.  I know what you’re thinking Couture lost to Lesnar and he is more of a vet and held both the LHW and HVW belt and to that I say, Couture is the man but obviously doesn’t have all the physical tools to do anything with Lesnar.

Mir finds a way to win in this fight.  He fights intelligently and cerebrally and withstands his charging mentality. I just can’t substantiate the fact that Lesnar has learned all he needs to learn to beat someone of with similar size and more skill.  Pick: Mir

BEZ’s take:

Despite everything I have read and seen on the previews this is most certainly a classic case of the mauler versus the submission artist. Lesnar claims he has mastered BJJ defense but it will surely be tested. Lesnar has looked absolutely dominating against Heath Herring and Randy Couture.  He has improved enormously since their first bout and I thought Lesnar was seconds away from a knockout victory before a suspicious ref stoppage. Mir looked great in the stand up against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira but let’s face it Nogueira should have lost to Tim Sylvia before he pulled a late submission out of his ass. Mir’s knockout was more a culmination of death by 1,000 punches rather than one death blow.

Lesnars biggest advantage is in the stand up. If Mir thinks he can stand and bang with Lesnar he is in big trouble.  Based on the interviews I have heard I think Mir knows he cant handle Lesnar standing up but he is trying to get Lesnar over confident. If the match goes to the ground it matches strength versus strength. Lesnar excels in top position especially when he can ground and pound. However top position opens up all sorts of submission for Frank Mir. Lesnar is an incredible athlete but how much submission defense can you learn in such a short time versus a guy that has trained submissions his whole life. As much as I would love for Lesnar to pound Mir’s face in I just can’t envision that happening. I think he gets over aggressive either on a takedown or caught in Mir’s guard and gets submitted. Mir Submission 2nd round.  Pick: Mir

If you had asked me this yesterday before the weigh-ins I would have given you a definite lesnar. He’s bigger, stronger, faster, and has been preparing specifically to not make the same mistakes he made last time. Then I saw frank Mir… Dear lord has he gotten bigger. Now that I’ve had a chance to see both fighters, my answer is still lesnar… Probably. I think Mir is going to give him more of a physsical challenge then he did before, but lesnar will still dictate when and where this fight takes place. I’ll give Mir 3 rounds to get tko’d by strikes

  2. stacks says:

so what were your overall records for picking the fights?

  3. MarkM says:

I agree that Lesnar is a very tough and athletic fighter. I however had thought that since he is a idiot he would have made a big mistake that would cost him the fight. I know you saw the fight, so I bet you realize that he tried to prove that he could stand up and bang with Mir when he let Mir get to his feet, in the later portion of the fight. That was one of the most arrogant and dumbest moves I have ever seen a champ make. He is not a great stand up striker and without a doubt, Mir would kill him if the fight stayed standing up. I look at Brock as what he is, a big dumb monster. He showed at UFC 100 that he has no class and no common sense. I know he is a imposing guy, but really man. What did you think when he decided to attack the crowd and the sponsors after the fight, disgracing MMA and the UFC octagon? This guy is not the smartest guy out there and thats a fact. Athletic skill in any sport will only get you so far, so don’t be surprised to see him fail in the not so distant future. Also I wonder if I the only one thinking he is getting fatter? Frank Mir without a doubt is the more proven fighter, and I need to remind you their record is 1-1. I can’t wait to see them fight again in the future!

  4. Blake the Megalomaniac says:

Yah he looked as if his muscle especially in the core and abdomen was waning. They will fight one more time if Mir can get thru a few other guys first and Mir will win. I don’t think there are anymore stopgaps Lesnar can learn to calculate a victory over MIr. Great gameplanning tho. Mir will spend time get stronger and working on counter to the reverse choke/pummel method and Mir will win. Lesnar is still good for the sport regardless of how he acted and if he can keep winning he will be the man credited with bringing MMA into the 4 major sport market.

  5. Blake the Megalomaniac says:

We both went 2 and 2.
