Usain Bolt Smokes 100m World Record

Usain BoltThis past weekend spectators at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin witnessed one of the fastest 100m finals in history. Three huge names in sprinting provided a viscous streak runway lead by the one and only Usain Bolt. In typical Bolt fashion, the young Jamaican not only set fire to the rest of the field, he also burned down the World Record he set just last summer.

9.58 seconds to cover 100m.  It is an absolutely ridiculous 100m time that bested the world record not by hundredths of a second like usual.  Bolt was a full tenth under the world record.  The more sickening thing is that this can’t be attributed to some magic suit like swimming’s recent rash of world records.  It seems that Buddha, Jehovah, God, Zeus, Darwin, or whomever you believe in carved this man out to be the perfect track specimen.  Tall enough to have and easy gait while powerful enough to get out of the blocks.

Tyson GayThere is no doubt that Bolt will break this record again before his time is up. However, there is one sad aspect to the spectacular show that Usain Bolt.  One of the greatest American sprinters in history has had a shadow of immense proportions cast over him.  Tyson Gay ran the third fastest 100m time in electronic timing history at 9.71s.  His time is only behind Bolt’s two world record times from last summer and this past weekend.  Gay earned his time.  He worked for every second especially after pulling a hamstring right before the Olympics last year.  Sadly for Gay, he was built for speed, but not like Bolt.  He simply doesn’t have a long enough stride to keep up with the massive Jamaican.  Gay may have already met his terminal velocity.

I’m going to keep watching for Bolt to smash the books, but all the while I’ll be hoping Gay catches fire one day and brings the record back from the Caribbean.

9.58 is simply one of the the most amazing feats in all of sports history. its hard to imagine that Bolt still has not reached his peak and more than likely will add to his record. I hate to see that Gay will always be second best to Bolt. His presence and drive will likely keep Bolt on his toes though.
