2009 Virginia Wine Festival Recap

A post by "Miss Pavla" To see more posts click here

FFT made its second appearance at the Virginia Wine Festival this year, and we decided to do things a little different and much more interactive. This time, not only did we sample select wines and enjoy the festivities, we decided to go and meet the people, show them some FFT love and really roll our sleeves up and leave our mark. We got out there and met fans and made friends, picked FFT’s “cutest kid” winner, and chose the best category winners, as selected by our ME. Without further ado . . .

BEST IN FESTIVAL:

Breaux WineryFox Meadow Winery and First Colony Winery (in this order!)

Apparently there is a reason that Breaux Winery has been voted Virginia’s best winery two years in a row (2008 & 2009). I was 2 wines in, before I was fully convinced. And once I tasted their Rose (see below), it was a sealed deal. Breaux is our top pick. Not to mention, their staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and great pourers!

Fox Meadow comes in at a strong second with the ‘best in white’ winner (and my personal favorite wine of the festival!) and a great selection of other wines.

First Colony comes in at third with their best in red winner and a great dessert wine they call “Late Harvest 2006″ . I had to give it a shout out because it was delectable.

Not only did we pick our favorite three because they each won one of our best in flavor categories, but also because the rest of their wines were equally satisfying! But as we all know, there can only be one….

BEST RED SAMPLED: Tannat, First Colony Winery

Although I am a lover or all kinds of wine, I left the choice of “Best Red” to John, as he prefers and enjoys dry wines much more than I do. So who better to decide the champion?

In John’s words, “The Tannat from First Colony was my favorite because while it was intensely flavorful, none of the flavors were too overwhelming.”

BEST ROSE SAMPLED: Syrah Rose, Breaux Winery

My favorite rose of the day is a creation by Breaux Winery. Aside from it’s unique composition, its quite tasty!

BEST WHITE SAMPLED: Freezeland White, Fox Meadow Winery

The absolute best wine (no other adjectives!) I tasted at the festival was one of the first one’s I tasted at Fox Meadow Winery.

As part of our ‘meet the fans’ program, we decided to give a free FFT t-shirt to the cutest kid we stumbled upon at the festival. Since it is a family event, there was plenty of food and sweets, a moon bounce, music and entertainment, and games for kids to enjoy. We also picked out cool people in cool attire and just enjoyed the great festivities and happy faces.
