Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi explains how Healthcare reform lost its pulse

health_care_plansRolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi writes a thorough piece (entitled Sick and Wrong) entailing how both Democrats and Republicans fucked things up for everybody by dropping the public option. It’s a lengthy read, but if you give a shit about anything other than yourself I strongly recommend you check it out.

p.s. for anybody who isn’t all that familiar with Taibbi’s work, he also wrote Inside the Great American Bubble Machine exposing Wall St. titan-firm Goldman Sachs.

Why isn’t anyone really talking about the fact that government regulations and loop holes are what created this mess in the first place.

The Insurance companies became the greedy institutions they are because they found ways to influence the government to pass legislation in their favor. Why is it that people can’t shop across state lines for coverage?

Why are some states only presented with two companies to choose from?

That is not a free market where prices live and die by supply and demand.

That is a market where government intervention has created cornered markets for companies to manipulate the system and screw the consumer.

This plan, no matter what comes from it, with almost certainly not do what it is designed to do and that is create an open market where the company that serves the consumer best wins.

Great article, as sad as it may be- thanks for bringing it to our attention. I’ve read Taibbi’s book called “The Great Derangement”, I recommend it to anybody who liked this article too. He’s a good insider with a no bullshit take on capital hill bullshit. This point gave me a good laugh:

“Will wasn’t the only prominent opponent of reform openly arguing in favor of the insurance industry’s right to continue doing business inefficiently. Sen. Ben Nelson, who together with Baucus are the Laverne and Shirley of turncoat Democrats, complained that the public option “would win the game.” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell admitted that “private insurance will not be able to compete with a government option.” This is a little like complaining that Keanu Reeves was robbed of an Oscar just because he can’t act.”
