College Basketball: The beginning of something special

The second week of October is a big week for college basketball teams.  It is the time they “begin” practicing for the upcoming season.  As a new contributor to FFT, I am beginning my practice as a college basketball blogger, something I began with FFT a few years ago as a guest writer for March Madness.  I spent the past seven years inundating my life with college basketball, including one season as a skinny, white, unskilled point guard at Belmont Abbey College, two seasons helping the South Carolina Gamecocks basketball squad and wishing I had a chance to compete with some guys who rounded out the roster, two years working for Coach Knight at Texas Tech, and two more spent in the Big Easy at the University of New Orleans.  Now, just as basketball season starts,  I will spend my eighth year venturing into a whole new world of writing about the game I love!unctarheels

In the next couple of weeks, I am going to preview the college basketball season as I expect Andy Katz , Jeff Goodman , Gary Parrish and others will do.  Hopefully, though, I will provide some input into what’s going to happen at the end of the season, not by what the recruiting catalogs tell you, not by who is buying the best players or knows coaching X’s and O’s, but by intangibles.  I will be closely following teams I have a pre-existing relationship with, but will also focus my efforts on getting to know teams and players who I don’t know.   Of course, since this is a DC-Metro blog, I will learn quickly about the teams in the Metro area.

Ultimately, my intention by blogging about basketball, is to show you that intangibles are things that keep some teams from winning more than a few games, provide roller-coaster seasons for mediocre teams, and culminate in the fantastic runs we witness March.  This upcoming season could disprove what I have in my head, that leadership, motivation, accountability and discipline have as much to do with winning as 5-star recruits, great facilities and TV exposure.  Consequently, intangibles also relate well to our jobs, our kids, politics, etc. so I will try to scatter my thoughts across the great variety of this blog.   Have a great weekend and as you think about your team, your employees, or your children:
