How I lost respect for Arianna Huffington
In the world of blogging it’s rare to find anyone who seriously puts a lot of stock into your personal opinion. By their very nature, blogs are not demonstrations of apt journalism and are heavily reliant on an audience that simply wishes to partake in the thoughts and opinions of someone they may/may not be able to relate to. As many of you probably already know, one of the most successful and widely read blogs on the internet is the Huffington Post, who’s founder, Arianna Huffington, has contributed heavily to the rise of blogging over the years.
Ms. Huffington recently posted an article on her own website entitled “Why Joe Biden Must Resign”, and after reading the article I can safely say that I have lost practically every ounce of respect I once had for her.
In an unbelievably self-righteous tone, Ms. Huffington calls on Vice President Joe Biden to resign should President Obama decide to provide Gen. McChrystal with the 40,000 troops requested for the Afghan military campaign. Her supporting argument is based on the fact that as chief skeptic of the Afghan effort, Biden should stand for his principles by abandoning the administration should Obama make the tough decision in McChrystal’s favor.
Now let me be clear, I agree very much with some of the points that the Vice President has made in regards to his position. I, like the Vice President, personally believe that we should really be focusing our efforts on Pakistan being as that Al Qaeda practically has had unrestricted backdoor access into the nation through the Tora Bora mountains. It’s been estimated that there are only about 100 Al Qaeda fighters remaining in Afghanistan, and most of the guerilla force has moved onto Pakistan in an effort to expand and contribute to the destabilization of the fragile (and nuclear armed) state. Despite this, the balance of resources is leveraged 30:1 with resources directed toward Pakistan being only 3% of the resources afforded toward Afghanistan.

It’s also important to realize that Pakistan’s military government has prohibited US special force operatives from sealing off Al Qaeda escape routes from the Pakistani side of the border, despite the fact that their military and intelligence strangely has proven to be incapable of doing so. This basically means that, if we’re going to be anywhere in that region, we need to be in region between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and approach from the Pakistani side of the border forcing Al Qaeda downward into the mountains.
But even though those are valid points, the President’s election of a different strategy is certainly no grounds for resignation from the sitting Vice President. The shear notion of it is unbelievable nonsense. It’s not like the war is the only thing going on in the world, nor is it even Biden’s chief responsibility. As Vice President and a veteran of the Foreign Relations Committee during his long tenure in the Senate, Biden is essentially Obama’s most important advisor and one of his go-to men for legislative matters. Moreso than that, Biden was elected to serve as Vice President. Contrary to Huffington’s assertation, Biden would be, above and beyond all, quitting on the very electorate that hired him for his prestigious post by resigning. Not only that, but he would also no longer be serving the President with what Huffington clearly acknowledges as important wisdom and expertise.
The resignation of Joe Biden would be what Arianna Huffington can best be described as: pompous and arrogant. It is nonsensical liberals like her that give the rest of us a bad name. In incredibly dangerous and uncertain times, now is not a time for overzealous acts of foolishness done for the sake of making a point. If she was able to get her head out of her own ass, maybe she’d realize that this administration practically insists upon playing chess with a media that plays checkers, and perhaps there’s more to the end decision than meets the eye.
But no matter what happens, at least Biden can say he stuck it through and did his job to the best of his abilities. That is what people with integrity do, and is also something that silver-spooned Arianna Huffington is likely to never understand.

While I agree that him resigning is a not smart move for many reason, I think one point in her post was important. He should be more vocal in his point of view in the public as to show that he is in opposition and has advocated a different strategy. Too many people in the Bush White house tried to come out way after the fact and say… ooo I was so against that and I took a hard line. I don’t believe a word they say. Biden should put forth his idea and let the public know where he stands. That way we all have more perspective and also see that it’s ok to support the President and hope he succeeds while strongly disagreeing with some of his decisions and policies.
