The Catholic Church versus DC council
So apparently, in an effort to strongarm DC’s city council into exempting the church from the same-sex legislation expected to pass next month, the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is threatening to pull it’s Catholic Charities non-profit organization that supports DC’s less fortunate. Catholic Charities helps the city run many of the shelters that serve about 1/3 of DC’s homeless population and has received a staggering $8.2 million in contracts over the past three years for services rendered (the group is permitted to accept city funds to perform social services).
Despite that the church is holding it’s charity as hostage, council chairman Vincent Gray isn’t showing signs of backing down. As mentioned in a recent article by the AP, Gray said that DC would simply find another organization to pick up CAofW’s slack should they decide that DC is no longer deserving of their support, and that there would be no room for compromise in this decision. Even good ol’ Jim Graham has stepped up to the plate, pressuring the CAofW by citing the continued support of the Catholic church in states like Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire where gay marriage has already been signed into law.
It’s painfully obvious that the Catholic church is getting too comfortable in dipping its foot in the dirty waters of politics. Between this and the recent (and very public) lobbying effort regarding abortion clauses in the health care reform bill, precedence is set that will serve to test the limits of the first amendment in this country. Hopefully, our elected officials will continue to take Jeffersonian approaches in dealing with a lobbying church, because we’ve all seen what happens when the line between church and state fades into oblivion.
Food for thought; udothedishes . . .

The District of Columbia’s Catholic Archdiocese is attempting to leverage its city’s government by way of conditional charity. Why? Duh… because that’s what Jesus would do! This sucker punch threatens cuts to social service programs upon the passage of a law allowing same-sex marriage. The Archdiocese wants to punish the poor because legislators wish to extend equal rights to all the lovely people who reside in our nation’s capital. Funds would be cut from the already suffering programs of adoption, homelessness and healthcare offered by Catholic Charities, the Archdiocese’s social services organization. This low blow could take a toll on anyone who relies on these programs, which in these oh so prosperous times, are already struggling. Maybe District of Columbia’s Catholic Archdiocese should open a newspaper and get caught up on the state of the economy. They might open a Bible right after to figure out the rest.

I’m a Catholic, and the Church’s stand on Homosexuality (and pedophilia) is the reason that I have become a non-practicing member. This is just another CON I have to add to my list. Its really embarrassing for the Church to be making such petty threats. To think my family donates to Catholic Charities every year…
