Wale shows focus on “Attention Deficit”
At long last, PG County’s very own Wale Folarin released his debut album “Attention Deficit” this past Tuesday, and I am glad to say that it doesn’t disappoint. When comparing the album to some of his previously released mixtapes (some of my favorites include The Mixtape About Nothing, 100 Miles and Running, and his finest work to date - Back to the Feature), it isn’t hard to notice that a bit of his artistic integrity was comprised by Interscope Records for the sake of following the predictable balance between party songs and “ridin’ music.” Nonetheless, Wale delivers a solid album that is very much his own despite the fact that 9 of the 16 tracks have guess features. The range of songs is fairly impressive and includes club/party songs like “Chillin” (featuring overrated sensation Lady Gaga), beat knockers like “Mirrors” (featuring label artist Bun B), and even go-go classics like “Pretty Girls” (featuring DC’s BackYard Band).

Where Wale truly demonstrates his lyrical acumen is in two songs in particular: “World Tour” (featuring Jazmine Sullivan) and “Shades” (featuring Chrisette Michelle). Both songs are largely introspective of Wale’s persona and highlight his ability to illustrate matters of substance through the lyrical medium. In “World Tour”, Wale borrows the chorus from “Award Tour” authored by legendary hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest and incorporates that into a beat that sounds very similar to “Changes” by the late Tupac Shakur, consequently making it my favorite song on the album.
Wale, a self enabling sneaker-fanatic, is still very much a young artist and much of it shows in his music, but he certainly has the potential to be a major voice in a commercial sector that has long since turned its back to artists like him in the past (see Lupe Fiasco). For years, Wale has proudly represented our tri-state area without hesitation so I felt obliged to purchase his album personally for the sake of contributing to a campaign committed to reclaiming Hip Hop.
As well you should, udothedishes…
