Outraged: NCAA Football Bowl Season
BCS Outrage:
The NCAA football season has come to a close and the bowl games are just around the corner. I’m sure there are plenty of fans elated that their team has made it to a big time stage to showcase their talent, while other fans, (See Gators) are crushed that their chances to win it all are done. While some teams can lay the blame only on themselves, there are certain injustices that are happening in college football right now that are ruining the integrity of the game.
The whole BCS system is complete garbage. Now, there are both “pros” and “cons” to this unique competitive process, but in my opinion the cons are winning. In fact I would argue that for a long time, people in the BCS system have been conning the entire nation. While the final championship game this year is justified in my opinion (arguments can be made on both sides) the real con lies in how the other BCS Bowl match ups ended up. Lets take a look.
1. BCS National Championship Game (Alabama v. Texas) – Both of these teams at least deserve to prove that they are #1 in the nation and I’m not hating this match-up. I think that Alabama will come out on top, simply because Texas’ defense is nowhere near as good as Florida’s and Bama ran all over them.
2. Sugar Bowl (Florida v. Cincinnati)- Here are two teams that missed a shot to play in the national championship by a hair. I think that both teams are strong but in reality Cincy has a terrible defense. Florida is going to dominate this team hands down. Tebow hates to lose and you can bet that Florida stops the daylights out of an outmatched Big East team in Cincy. This match up is a joke. It should have been Florida v. TCU. TCU has one of the best defenses in the country right now, and I would love to see if they can back up their undefeated season by facing a true powerhouse in Florida.
3. Rose Bowl (Oregon v. Ohio State)- Now being an OSU alum, I am usually a little biased. But the Rose bowl is the worst of the worst violators of the Con of America. The Big Ten and Pac Ten champs are the automatic bids here. I do think this will be a great game matching a great Oregon Offense against one of the best statistical defenses in Ohio State. But still, how do two teams that both lost two games this year wind up playing in the rose bowl against each other? There should be a team with no loss in this bowl. I think that a fair match up here would be Oregon v. Cincy. Both have a run and gun style offense and very poor defense. It would be a shootout type of game that every football fan would enjoy.
4. Orange Bowl (Iowa v. Georgia Tech) – By default GT gets in because they won the ACC this year. I’m not that against GT. They too only lost 2 games and averaged more rushing yards per game than any team in NCAA. This match up comes against a very strong Iowa defense. I think you could argue that Iowa does not deserve a BCS bid, but based on their record and the lack of a better argument this is a “In by default” situation. I would be ok if another SEC team got in instead to make this game more interesting. A rematch of Georgia v. Georgia Tech would be fun to watch.
5. Fiesta Bowl (TCU v. Boise State)- This match up is travesty. And not because I think that these two teams don’t deserve to be in the BCS. On the contrary. These two teams got the shaft. Yes, they are both undefeated and are playing on the national stage, but why not let them have a chance to battle it out with the Big 6 schools. Let them show the world that they can beat the best. This match up was a ploy to down play any controversy that would have arisen if we had a repeat of last year or the year before (SEE Utah Beating Alabama 08 & Boise beating Oklahoma 07). This match up should be Boise State v. Ohio State. A great match up of a strong Offense that loves to play tricky and loose verses a smash mouth defense. Ohio State has a strong base and many loyal fans in the Tempe area and always ensure a huge crowd in and around the city.
So here is what I think based on the current system
Bama v. Texas – National Championship game
Iowa v. Ga Tech – Orange Bowl
Oregon v Cincy – Rose Bowl
Florida v. TCU – Sugar Bowl
Boise St. v. Ohio State – Fiesta Bowl
If I could, I would have a playoff with 16 teams. It would be a regular bracket like the NCAA Basketball and last only a month. Any team that was not in the bracket would still be able to get bids to the other bowl games and the major sponsor could still sponsor the different rounds of the playoffs.
Here is an example from last year

Every conference champion from all 11 conferences would get an automatic bid. Then there would be 5 additional at large bids trying to keep it so no conference has more than two teams in the bracket.

These ladies agree that this is the way to do it this year.
- Alabama
- Texas
- TCU
- Cincinnati
- Boise St.
- Florida (at Large)
- Ohio State
- Oregon
- Georgia Tech
- Va. Tech (at large)
- Iowa (at large)
- West Virginia (at large)
- Nebraska (at large)
- Central Michigan (Mid-American Champ)
- Troy (Sunbelt Champ)
- ECU (Conf. USA Champ)
Games would start on December 12 (Rd.1)
ROUND ONE
Match up
Bracket One
Bama v. ECU = Bama
OSU v.Va. Tech = OSU
Boise St. v. WVU = Boise St.
Cincy v. Nebraska = Nebraska
Bracket Two
Texas v. Troy = Texas
Oregon v. Ga Tech. = Ga. Tech
Florida v. Iowa = Florida
TCU v. Cent. Mich = TCU
ROUND TWO. (Each of 4 games are the BCS BOWL SPONSORS)
ONE
Bama v. OSU = Bama
Boise St. v. Nebraska = Nebraska
TWO
Texas v. Ga Tech = Texas
Florida v. TCU = TCU
ROUND THREE
SEMI- FINAL (Whole Round Sponsored in one Stadium* Like final four)
ONE
Bama v. Nebraska = Bama
TWO
Texas v. TCU = TCU
ROUND FOUR
BAMA v. TCU = Bama (Bonafide National Champ)
what do you think?

A lot more people are smarter than I deal with this stuff, but one stat that was interesting to me was that something like 85% of the other championships in college athletics (other than football) are funded by the NCAA tournament (basketball). There is a ton of money in bowl games, but BCS proponents say that that is a reason for keeping the bowl system in place. As if the money is not going to be there with a playoff??? That’s a joke. The bowl system makes teams look forward to post-season. Yes, it does, but with struggling economies and lack of fans in seats (see ACC championship in FL), why not eliminate bulsh bowl games and do what you say above. One prob with your solution, J Mal, is travel. Not only travel with the football teams themselves (150+ people flying mutiple places, etc) but also fans travel….unless Bracket 1 & 2 represent games played at higher seeded arenas. There are issues with a playoff, but it’s not quite the same as with the BCS – it is irreprehensible that TCU/Boise meet, basically the BCS is saying, we don’t want to see a non-BCS beat a BCS, that’s it.
Wetzel does it again. His plan works if you want a true National Champion. Think of the possible match ups this year.

Wetzel made a great argument. I wish I were the one to see it changed. Maybe we should start up a business solely based on creating a college football playoff and getting a reward out of it. People of our generation don’t realize when John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins were winning like 15 titles in the 60′s and 70′s that there were only a max of 24 teams in the tournament then. In the 1930-1950s, there were only 8. Now, like I said above, the NCAA tourney funds every other championship in college athletics except football. Unreal money. I’m not sure what the debate is, ya know?
