Sunday’s Food for Thought: Our favorite DC-Blogs

A post by "Stacks " To see more posts click here

Although we here at Food for Thought like to believe that we’re the DC-centric blog of note; the fact is that this area is blessed with a plethora of talented writers who cover a vast array topics dealing with the subtle (spoken & unspoken) nuances that exist within this strangely unique metropolitan area.  As could be expected there are tons of political blogs, but that is far from the only category we’re good at around here. So, what we’ve done is tried to include a mix in the list below that is as diverse as the people who write them and we encourage you to check them out.  Some of them are huge with a large following, some are smaller ones that we just happen to read regularly and enjoy (and a few of them we just found while researching this post and look forward to reading more of in the future).  With literally thousands of local blogs (and new ones starting everyday), it of course would be impossible to include them all.  So, if there are any that I have missed that you feel are worthy of a mention, please feel free to suggest them in the comments and we will make sure to check them out to include in future posts.

Our Favorite DC Blogs:

The Couch Sessions “The premier online destination for alternative urban music and culture. The online magazine, created in 2005, covers emerging artists in hip-hop, R&B, electronica, house, rock, and all things in between.”

The DC AM has a nice little twist to it right from the jump, in that it serves a duel purpose as both a blog providing commentary on a wide array of current events categories, as well as an audio archive of the episodes of The Hideout (many of which aired locally on the old WJFK FM).  In this way they are both preserving the past as well as creating in the future.  (Make sure you check out their live Christmas show on 12/22 @ 10pm)

DC Blogs is the place to go to find out what’s currently being talked about within the blogging community and is also a good place to go if you’re looking for a new site to start reading on the regular.

DC City Blog - “An Insiders Guide to DC”

The DC Concierge – News and Fashion

DC Foodies – “The Politics of Dining”

DC Insider is a consumer protection blog that gives you an insider’s look at the government and where your tax money is going.  A great resource for finding news about government agencies and also a place to find where you need to go to file a formal complaint against a particular agency; DC Insider is an invaluable tool for keeping our elected officials in check.

DC Sportsbog is a DC-focused blog on sports, commentary, and features by the Washington Post’s, Dan Steinberg.  Now normally when you think of a blog, you don’t think of a page that’s an offshoot from some large newspaper’s website, but the fact that the Post seems to give Steinberg some freedom to express his views, allows the writer’s personality to show through and that is what makes this one worth including.

The DC Universe – Sports, movies, video games, D.C. life, news, and misc.

Dupont Darling -  Dupont Circle, the District, and beyond

Eating Around DC – “Musings of a DC Area Foodie

Famous DC – Covers “the famous-for-DC intersection of politics, media and sports”

Holla Back DC! “is fighting street harassment in America’s capital by empowering Washingtonians to speak out against gender based public sexual harassment.”  The site features stories of sexual harassment, calls to action to fight back, and also mentions events and other organizations with similar goals (see their recent post on Man Up, an international summit to teach individuals how to go about creating an actionable plan).

JDLand is an award winning photo-blog that was inspired by all of the renovation taking place in SE.  From her apartment she had a clear view of the stadium construction and wanted to document the transformation as it occurred.  The result?  A lot of great photo archive of one of the largest revitalization projects in the city’s history.

Mango & Tomato – Very photogenic blog brought to you by a genuine foodie.

Prince of Petworth – Neighborhood blog

Project Beltway – DC Fashion Blog

ReadysetDC – “A Creative Urban Enterprise” covering topics such as architecture, art, culture, cycling, events, fashion, food and drink, interviews, music, photography, and more.

Roissy in DC – “Where Pretty Lies Perish”

Roosh V (formerly DC Bachelor) – Author and self-described sexist blogging about his travels and his opinions on a variety of subjects.

Vox Populi is the staff blog for the Georgetown Voice which is the news magazine of Georgetown University.  Basically, it is a place where the staff members are able to actually post their opinions on new stories as opposed to having to just report on them.  What’s nice about this site is that often these opinions seem to cut through a lot of the P.C. B.S. rather than just creating their own spin (which is often the case with many editorial-style blogs).  Another nice result of their approach is that it often allows the writers to touch on topics which otherwise may not be deemed worthy of coverage in a University periodical, but are entertaining nonetheless.

Washwords – “One woman’s words, wonderings, wanderings in Washington D.C.”

We Love DC – “Your Life Beyond The Capitol”

14th & You – Blogging along 14th Street
