Va Tech, Terps Basketball Will Struggle
VA Tech Men’s Basketball’s season so far is not very promising. I hated on Seth Greenberg’s personality but not his coaching in my preview and I don’t really plan on changing my opinion. Delaney is the only option Va Tech has. I watched some of the game last night and from looking at the scores of their previous games, there would not be a lot to get excited about for the Hokie Pokies.
Greenberg needs an influx of talent, not at one position but at 3, and then needs great role players like he had the first couple years with Deron Washington, etc. I always felt Va Tech competed best when Coleman Collins was in the lane making things difficult on the defensive end and creating new opportunities on the offensive end with easy post-ups or offensive rebounds. I’m sure Coach Greenberg would love a solid big if he could find one. Those of you who are Hokie fans, let him know in the Metro area who he needs to target! The Hokies will probably not be great in the ACC this year because teams will focus on Delaney and then pound the glass and get the ball inside – lack of depth will hurt.
The Terps were going to be my upset special in ACC along with Clemson, but after watching them I am slightly concerned about Gary Williams’ squad. The team I wanted them to resemble is the Juan Dixon led team, with that void filled by Grevis Vasquez. Unfortunately, they are looking more like the Steve Francis-led team which is just good enough to get you beat.
Juan Dixon had a decent supporting cast, but none more important than
goofy, white boy Steve Blake. He ran the show, Dixon led the team. When Steve Francis was there he was a one-man show, selfishly, and they had success (like 30-6 or something, I think) because he was so uber-talented. Grevis Vasquez is not trying to be selfish like Steve Francis, I don’t think, but the whole team revolves around him. Him to handle the ball, him to make the right calls, him to run the team, him to lead, him to score. Maryland needs to find a way to let Grevis play off his teammates, and it may cost them games, but not as many as what’s going to happen as Grevis continually gets doubled, fouled, frustrated and selfish because he has to do EVERYTHING! We’ll see how it shakes out because I love it when the Terps are riding high!
In other news:
We’ll see how good GW is when they face a legit mid-major George Mason tonight.
ODU is as tough as predicted. W&M scored a HUGE upset for their program beating Wake Forest (and beating Richmond, Hampton was good too). Already like how Shaka has responded after losing, by getting resounding, coach-altering wins vs OU and Nevada.
