All-White Basketball League Proposed
Wow. Good to see Dip Metress, Brian Metress’ brother (Lake Braddock SS Head Basketball Coach), take a strong stance against this. There is not much to say. This is dumb, stupid, racist, and unfortunate for a city to have to deal with in the deep South. Don Lewis is now in my top ten list of stupidest people in the world especially after making the claim that white ballas are “essentially shutout of conventional professional basketball due to the growth of non-organized play on the court.”
Really? That’s the reason?
Lewis also made the claim in another article I read that people don’t want to watch players who bring guns to locker rooms or attack fans in the stands. What he says is a cloak for his belief that he doesn’t like black people, doesn’t like to see them have success, whether on a court or a classroom or in the presidency and would much rather see the “whrite” way of doing things.
Why, exactly, is the white game fundamental? Is it because white guys are not as athletic as black guys and therefore whites have to make layups rather than dunks? Is it because most whites can’t dropstep and dunk from the block and rather need to shoot a nice little hook shot over the defense? I am not sure why. The fundamentals Lewis speaks of, in his twisted mind, are not inherently white. JJ Reddick (former Duke guard, Cave Spring HS (VA) grad, now in NBA) can shoot but Gilbert Arenas (Arizona guard, in NBA) can shoot, dribble, create his own shot, get to the rim, dunk on someone, defend the other teams best player, and find the open man in transition and in the half-court. So when fundamentals come into play, who can shoot better?
JJ? Who can pass better? Gilbert? Who can create his own shot? Gilbert.? Who can drive and finish at the rim? Gilbert? Who can defend? Gilbert? Who is the better fundamental player, Gilbert? Not just the better fundamental player, but the better player period.
Read the short little article here by Fraendy Clervaud about the proposed All-White Basketball League set to begin soon:
Augusta, GA—This is not the type of news that Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver wanted to hear the day after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Mayor Deke Copenhaver: “I am a sports enthusiast, myself, but I just don’t think that idea is going to fly in Augusta, Georgia.”
It’s the idea of an all white professional basketball league. According to a press release from the All- American Basketball Alliance, the group is looking to target southern cities such as Augusta, Albany and Chattanooga, Tennessee to form a team.
Mayor Copenhaver: “We have done to much to really foster a spirit of inclusiveness in this city.”
The press release goes on to say that only natural born United States citizens and players, whose parents are both Caucasian, can join the league.
Dip Metress, ASU Head Men’s Basketball Coach: “Nobody is going to put money behind this. Basketball is an international game. We have three, four international players here and coaches international.”
Don “Moose” Lewis is the league commissioner and says that “white basketball players” are essentially shutout of conventional professional basketball due to the growth of non-organized play on the court. This statement is not sitting well with Metress.
Metress: “The game has changed throughout the years. In a sense, it’s more athletic games, but the fundamentals are not eroding.”
Lewis also states players on professional teams are carrying guns, attacking fans, and fundamentally sound white players are a vanishing species.
Mayor Copenhaver: “You still see lots of players who are fundamentally sound that basketball is played in a bunch of different fashions. You have five different positions. You have a point guard who distributes the ball, so I think basketball is basketball.”
udothedishes…
yeah, the thought of an all white b-ball league just won’t sell. not gonna happen. its like Coach Metress said, the game of basketball, mainly the actual base and fundamentals hasn’t changed and probably never will. but the style of ball has changed from the and is more fast paced. it especially changed with the addition of the 24 second clock. not saying that black guys are faster or that white can’t run a fast break and dunk it; simply put, there’s more black people playing basketball than white people, hence more black guys scouted for scholarships and making it into the league. there’s that fact and also most black kids are playing ball starting from a very young age and are just better than most white guys. but don’t worry my my brothers from an other mother and a different color, you guys still have hockey, got golf back (Way to go Tiger), the winter Olympics, X-games, and majority ownership of most ball teams in all sports and corporate America. I think y’all will be ok.
