Sports Journalists make me “Level 5 Pissed”

Posted by Seigle Seigle (Follow Me)- Seigle Seigle is a married man and former Louisiana resident. His little man is 6. His little chica is 15 mos. And he is 26, unreal! - To see more posts by this author click here

March 11th, 2010My main man Chad Ochocinco claims often that he gets “Level 5 Pissed” when sports personalities like Skip Bayless or Jason Whitlock call him out.  Along with his other catch phrases like Child Please, Kiss the Baby, and Wish a MothaF***** Would (WAMW), I really enjoy it when I can use “Level 5 Pissed.” Right now I am Level 5 Pissed because I absolutely cannot stand the national level sports journalists and personalities.  Guys like Bill Simmons, I respect, but can’t understand.  Chris Berman doesn’t rub me the wrong way like he does everyone else.  Jalen Rose would rather spend every night talking about the Fab 5, Detroit (where he grew up) or his dominance in the NBA.  The best “journalists” on TV are Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Ernie Johnson because they keep it real, son. I’ve put together two lists: the first one is the “good” and the second one contains the “bad” as far as it pertains to the sports commentators, journalists, and hosts.

Here are some people I like (REMEMBER THIS IS NATIONAL):

TNT Team (Barkley, Smith, Johnson) for NBA

Bob Knight, Bill Raftery, Fran Frashcilla, former Bruin Hubert Davis for CBB

Harold Reynolds, Buster Olney, Peter Gammons for MLB

Dan Patrick for Sports Radio, SVP is good radio too

Chris Collinsworth, Peter King, Jimmy Johnson for NFL

James Brown, Mike Tirico, Dan Schulman for studio host/play by play

Best sportswriter in country is Paul Daughtery from Cincinnati Enquirer (Bob Ryan is real good, Tony Kornheiser was good too), and not just because I’m a Cincy fan

What I really want to talk about is people who completely suck at their jobs:

#5 Seth Davis – He is on my all-time list of guys I can’t stand.  Here’s what he said that set me off and prompted me to write (via Twitter):  ”This notion that Calipari can’t win COY bc he has good players is ridiculous. The most important thing a coach does is recruit.”  For one, that’s not true. Two, Seth’s only job is a college basketball analyst and well, he makes some ignorant comments about the sport.  Just because went to Duke and have a great job doesn’t mean what you say is correct, it means you should pay more attention so you don’t look dumb. Let me ask you, FFT fans, if you were a boss and had to hire people, do you hire good people and hope they’re good for you with no direction, motivation, purpose, or do you hire good people and make them better?  Do you sacrifice long term gains for short term goals?  In some cases, you have to do those things, but if you are a good boss, you find the best people for your company, you test/challenge/squeeze the best from them, you motivate them to do it better than they thought they could, then you reap big time rewards.

#4 Skip Bayless – I would just like him to say one positive thing about someone at some point.  Just so that I know he’s not reading headlines all day or that he is possibly watching a game or two in his free time, maybe he could address something other than his hatred for Chad Ochocinco or Terrell Owens.  Bayless lacks awareness, comes across as a buffoon and looks like he tans with the woman from “Something about Mary.”

#3 Rick Reilly – This one kind of pains me.  He used to be so good with SI and now he can’t speak, he can’t write.  This is like the golfer who lost his stroke and can’t get it back.  Rick Reilly was a star and now is very bad at his profession.  He re-used a column from SI in his ESPN column (HERE! ) in December and has looked so bad on TV.  He continues to abuse the fact that he has written about Tiger to now acting as if he is Tiger’s personal shrink on TV – marketing himself on TVfor that first sit-down interview instead of just doing his job.

#2 Jay Mariotti – This could be Mike Lupica too.  Northern folks are all arrogant, so Jay’s arrogance does not bother me.  But, when Jay’s arrogance becomes a way for him to berate the people he covers, I just find it sad.  Jay is like Skip Bayless, they are people you watch and feel like you have to take a shower immediately afterwards.

#1 Doug Gottlieb – Let me give you a little history lesson about our good friend, P90X marketer Doug Gottlieb. 1, he was a criminal, but I can get over that. 2, he played for one of the biggest cheaters and probably bigger alcoholics in Eddie Sutton (although I do love Eddie, I have to say) 3, based on the first two, he should not be allowed to speak on controversial topics, but he loves to anyway.  Gottlieb knows his basketball (his dad is a AAU cheater, I mean, coach) in California and the Gottlieb name is gold in CA.  Gottlieb was a GREAT basketball player, I mean GREAT.  He was selfless and knew the game better than most, including coaches, on the court.  He just makes me sick now when he opens his mouth, that’s all.

I know The Mega hates Mike and Mike, let’s hear the people you MUTE when the TV/Radio is on…

Personally Greg Anthony gets on my nerves, and he’s actually a sleazeball, from what I’ve heard, in real life.

But i gotta Say Siegle, I agree with Seth Davis’ comment that a college coach’s job is to recruit. First off, if you talk to anyone that is part of college basketball, they will, for the most part agree with this statement. You can claim that a good coach gives direction, and teaches, etc etc etc, …blah blah blah. Essentially its bullshit at the college level. If you can recruit REALLY well and somewhat motivate, you’ll win all the games you want, and ill tell you why:

College Coaches vs Team interaction timetable

Aug21-oct15 – preseason – maximum of 8 hrs a week of interaction with your team
    oct 15-April 1- season – s o 2.5-3hr practices daily, when you’re not playing a game/traveling to a game…so prolly 3-4practices a week = 12 hours/wk
    April1-Aug21: no coaching contact whatsoever = 0 hrs/wk

You tell me how much TEACHING can get done when there is limited interaction wtih your team?! Granted, most programs cheat (no comment!) but the fact remains that you have to bring in great talent, and you have to bring in great talent that spends a lot of their own time working on their game,..and maybe hire a great Strength and Conditioning coach for the summer (because they can interact with the team, even though you, Coach, can’t). The reality is college coaching is a business,…any college coach will tell you its more sales (selling yourself and what you can do for the kid) and business and a bit of motivation, than any kind of teaching.

So i think your idealogy on a good college coach is a little misguided and naive…coming from someone thats been there, done that. Sorry!
